Rob, your application is totally correct! I'm one of the dunces who pronounces mischievous "mischievious" and just found out, after all these years, that I have always been totally wrong! How embarrassing! I am hanging my head in shame. I was only going to comment on your clever alliteration until I realized this.

Oh! Well what threw me off was your saying something about my "superior" usage of "American" as opposed to "English," coupled with the portion of the definition that you had bolded.

For what it's worth, I would also disagree with the Urban Dictionary's assertion that "mischievous" should be pronounced as miss-CHI-vus. It is my understanding that the word is pronounced MISS-chə-vəs, and Merriam-Webster would back me up on that.

Merriam-Webster, however, does add this usage note: “A pronunciation \mis-ˈchē-vē-əs\ and a consequent spelling mischievious are of long standing: evidence for the spelling goes back to the 16th century. Our pronunciation files contain modern attestations ranging from dialect speakers to Herbert Hoover. But both the pronunciation and the spelling are still considered nonstandard.”

So you see, you're not really wrong, per se, just nonstandard. But heck, we all already knew that.
