Exercise a little patience and spend some time just listening to the stock talk going on here and while you're at it try to read a book or two about trading and the basics of researching for stocks on your own. Any questions you might have will get answered pronto here. If you do come up with a pick run it by everyone here to get several opinions and then base your decision on that. There's no need to start off with big money or share trades. Just start making a few smaller trades, 10 or 20 shares of something you like for whatever reasons, and get your feet wet that way. In time you will start to feel comfortable and you will have eased into it in a subtle way. There is a wealth of knowledge here that will steer you in the right direction or at least give you the pros and cons of what you might be considering. But at this point I wouldn't let anyone else manage what money you have left. It's just as easy to lose it for yourself on your own. Exercise patience, there is no rush to do anything until you feel comfortable knowing all the parameters. As everywhere there will be people here who will try to push their ideas on you. Absorb what is good and fits for you and filter out the rest. It's just like picking stocks. But exercise patience and don't rush into anything especially another money manager or managed fund. Good luck.
Mary...to expand upon what Ski is talking about...I agree that you can learn something from others here...BUT, please be cautious...I'd suggest that you try and pick up on concepts rather than actual pix.
I have been investing since the late 60's and been serious about investing since '83. I starting joining forums in 1997-98...I ran across some smart cookies around 2000...But trying to duplicate what they were doing never worked.
My whole point is...Pick up on concepts, theory, ideas etc...Set your goals and develop a style that you are comfortable with. Sure, you'll pick up on some stocks that others mention that fit your criteria...But please don't attempt to copy anyone...It won't work unless you can be in constant contact w/ them via IM or telephone...Best, Doug"Trade What Is Happening...Not What You Think Is Gonna Happen"

Skiracer & Iceman, thanks for the sage advice you gave to Mary. It sounds good to me. Money management can be a tricky and perilous endeavor. A good, working knowledge of market forces, the fear and greed that drive markets, the companies one invests in, etc., are a person's best defensive weapon against devastating capital losses—and even then there are no guarantees. Anyone who invests their own money in the stock market without first doing some homework and educating themselves is taking a far greater risk than one who has made that additional effort.
This POTW contest is a fun—and safe—way for one to test his or her investing ideas. Personally I would like to see people include their reasons behind their picks more often, as that would make it an even greater learning experience. But I nevertheless view this contest as a fun and very worthwhile diversion. It forces you to do your homework, and this results in a better understanding of the markets. And a better understanding of the markets heightens your ability to successfully manage your real-life nest egg. What else are you going to do with your time? Watch Laverne & Shirley reruns?—Rob

At various times, I posted similar words. From time to time, I have
shared various calculations that I use. I think that, after talking to people
around me, some [people] believe that their “picking system” is better than anyone around, so they do not want to “give” it away. I am a team person. I do not have all the answers. But I am willing to carry my share of the load if the end result is something good. What do you think?Tim - Retired Problem Solver

If people don't want to post their reasons for their picks, for whatever their reasons are, well that's their prerogative. But we could all learn more from each other if people would simply say why they like this or that stock. That can be done without giving away the store.—Rob

Missing In Action
What has become of Karel? This is the second week he's failed to enter a pick in the POTW. That's not like him.
Edit: I just checked his profile, and it shows his last activity as 10/13/2006 3:22 a.m. I hope nothing bad has happened to him.—Rob
