sharks, chickens and other birds
...the other day I was strolling along the beach (at high tide you can't run) when I found a bird I have never seen before (it was dead). I studied it for quite a while so I could remember its markings and google it. Turns out it was a northern gannett. Pretty interesting marine bird that is not usually found dead along the coast of Maine. You may have seen footage of it on some nature show.....it sky-dives from over a hundred feet above the water surface, and plows straight into the ocean after bait fish. Its wing span was over 6' and has a long, knife shaped bill and very stream-lined body. It hits the water at over 60 mph....apparently the bird has special air sacs that absorb the impact of the collision. It also has a very interesting mating dance it does...oh well, enough of wild kingdom.
