This Thread will profile highly rated stocks in industry groups showing a strong upward trend for the last 6 months.
Positive and negative comments on these stocks are both welcome as is technical analysis.
Out of the thousands of stocks listed on the NYSE , AMEX , and NASDAQ , I discovered just as I completed this writeup that IBD posted a story on the same company. It appears in the Monday Oct. 10th issue. There is no connection between their story and mine other than possible identical numbers for stock prices , earnings, etc.
Industry Group : medical equipment
Company : Iris International Nasdaq (IRIS)
IRIS is a leading manufacturer of automated urinalysis and diagnostic equipment as well as other machines used in the medical fields of chemistry , coagulation , cytology , and hemetology. Their products are sold to hospitals and clinical laboratories as well as to veterinary markets worldwide.
The company consists of the IRIS diagnostic division in Chatsworth, California , the Stat / Spin subsidiary in Norwood , Mass. and the
Digital Imaging Research facility near Houston , Texas.
The diagnostic division produces equipment that reduces cost and time previously wasted by analyzation using the microscope. Their top of the line analyzers crank out 65 sample results per hour at a price 40% below that of their predecessor.
A major innovation , the IQ 200 analyzer, is the first product that integrates results between urine chemistry and urine microscopy analyzers. There is no double handling of samples as the IQ 200 performs 12 different analyses to the competitions 5 . Samples are loaded , buttons are pushed , results are printed out. This is a big improvement from the days when a doctor would place his tongue on the sample (sweet taste usually meant diabetes) although Dr. House still uses this method in emergencies. Complete IQ 200 systems cost $120,000 though most are leased , especially in Europe.
Urinalysis is a 550 million dollar business worldwide. IRIS is on track to dominate this industry.
IRIS also manufactures equipment that analyzes 8 other bodily fliuds including those of the knee joint , the spine , and the abdomen. These tests are more profitable than urine analysis.
The Stat /Spin subsidiary in Norwood Mass. manufactures centrifuges and blood analyzers. They claim the world's fastest blood separator (30 seconds) and can produce high quality plasma in 2 minutes.
Stat /Spin has sold 30,000 small blood separating centrifuges to emergency rooms and labs in addition to 15,000 for use in veterinary medicine. Stat /Spin revenue accounts for 19% of IRIS revenue.
The Texas based Digital Imaging Research facility has received a 2 million dollar U.S. government grant to develop a 3-D face recognition system . Most current systems are 2-D. IRIS is working on software for instant 3-D recognition using on the spot photos of suspected terrorists and criminals especially those using airports and other hubs of public transportation. CEO , Cesar Garcia expects to have software functional within 18 months.
In a 2004 Wall Street interview , Garcia notes that IRIS is in good financial shape with no debt , 17 million in cash and 16 million in credit available.
IRIS had 3 international distributers in 2002 , 39 by mid 2004.
IRIS is on the cutting edge of medical technology developing automated equipment at a time when the population is ageing , requiring more medical tests with fewer available medical technologists.
The potential for their 3-D imaging software in the security industry is virtually unlimited.
