    Has anyone ever ?

Have any of you ever opened an account just to get in on an IPO ? If so how much is minimum amount to get in the door such as GOOG IPO or Goldman Sachs Under Armour IPO . Maybe they go down the list if the big boys don't take all until the minimum $$ accounts get the scraps. Just a guess Doug , Spike ., you probably would know. I really wanted UPS and GOOG but hesitated too long maybe it was hopeless anyway.

I assume you are looking to get in early...On the really good ones...I'd say your min. account balance should be at least 1 million...But more important than that is to "know" somebody.

If you want to get in on so-so ones...or get a small amount of a good one...it varies way down $ wise...but it is still best to know somebody...IIC

Ya, like most things in life it's who you know, how well you're networked and how much you've got.

I was with MWD at one time... back when they were just called "Morgan Stanley" I held a "sizeable" balance in my account.... I was able to get in on a few IPO's but they were the very large issues.... and I got very few shares.

Most of the good tech stocks (with limited shares) weren't even available at the local branch (according to my broker). The ones that were got gobbled up by the Sr. brokers.... If you try it, you'll need to know who the (top) Sr. brokers at the branch are.... and even then, they'll give their good "lawyer" buddies and country club, golfin pals first shot.

I moved ALL my funds to an online account years ago (Ameritrade), best thing I ever did.... Ameritrade Apex is fantastic IMO, I even have a personal rep to call if I'm pissed off about something.lol... They negotiated a super low margin rate with me (well below published rates) to get me away from MWD.... Recently, when I complained about commission costs, they slashed my commission in HALF and gave me 500 free trades to boot to keep me around (I demanded the free trades and they complied)! They also send me cool gifts like a portable DVD player I received about a month ago. Of course I'll probably pay them $30k+ this year in comissions and margin interest.

I was just curious how to get in on an IPO? Is there anyway to get in on it through Ameritrade or do I have to wait until it hits the secondary market? How long does that usually take?

The ones you want to get into are already typically sold out to favored institutional investors. The ones offered to you are available for a reason <g>.

Robb has had a lot of success in getting IPO shares in years past. Maybe he can offer some guidance.

My Great Uncle was in on quite a few of them...I think they called them Syndicates...Sometimes they got burned...but overall he did very well.

I wanted to get into the Chipotle IPO but I suppose that will be sold out. It's too bad I don't want a lot of shares but I guess that don't matter.

We have one here in Lincoln, NE and its always packed. It's right by campus and I have yet to hear someone that doesn't like it. In fact, in class today we took 30 minutes out just to talk about how good it is. There are almost 4 locations in Omaha, which is 45min from here and they too are always packed. I really believe in this company I just need to get in on it before the stock shoots up way too high. Maybe it will fly under the radar. I hope so.
