Jim...Betcha never thought your question would lead to all this???
But on a serious note...Just because you joined doesn't mean that you need to interact with everybody if you don't want to. In fact you'll probably not even want to look at every thread...Maybe you will just want to concentrate on a couple of threads???
With over 1500 members I would say it is pretty much impossible to follow everyone. And actually, there's probably less than 50 that post with any regularity...But following 50 would be a monumental task too.
If you only find one good idea a week in this forum I'd say your time would be well spent at least reading the serious posts...Best, Doug(IIC)
I know I am the new guy here

I know the type of sales people you are talking about Lye...I have those guys for breakfast too...But I can think of no one who would not benefit from taking the main Dale Carnegie course.
I worked for very large Banks for over 16 years...It was required that I take jillions of courses especially in the late 70's to mid 80's...Many I did not want to take...But there was no choice back then if you wanted to be left standing with all the staff cuts. They paid for everything anyway. Admittedly. some courses were not that great...but some were. Overall, I'd rate the DC course as the most beneficial one I ever took...Doug

Gen'l Patton did. (I know, I know; he didn't drive a GEHL).

LOL.... there's alot of truth in this post. I do tend to run a lean ship.Originally posted by New-born babyI think it would be fun myself, but it wouldn't last long. You've been shovelling snow for over a year, but Lye would show up to work with his GEHL skidloader, and the shovelling would be over in an hour. Then Doug and I would be looking for another job because there would be no work.
BTW, BillyJoe, I hope to post a link on the Canadian tax refund tomorrow.

I have salesmen call on me all the time trying to sell me machinery, materials, tools and supplies etc.... I can spot the ones that have been to these BS courses a mile away. Especially when they use my name five times in a sentence (trying to make me feel important) and give me these big crap eatin grins.... I just hustle em on out the door and make em think there's actually a snowball's chance in hell that I'll ever buy their wares.Originally posted by IICI learned to let people save face when I got an A+ in Dale Carnegie's "How to win friends and influence People"...Actually, that was the book...The class was something like D.C.'s Effective Communications & Human Relations
...But no matter...Here is what I learned:
Six Ways To Make People Like You
1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
2. Smile.
3. Remember that a man's name is to him the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
4. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about theirselves.
5. Talk in terms of the other man's interests.
6. Make the other person feel important-and do it sincerely.
Twelve Ways To Win People To Your Way Of Thinking
1. The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it.
2. Show respect for the other man's opinions.
3. If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically.
4. Begin in a friendly way.
5. Get the other person saying, "yes, yes" immediately.
6. Let the other man do a great deal of the talking.
7. Let the other man feel that the idea is his.
8. Try to honestly see things from the other person's point of view.
9. Be sympathetic with the other person's ideas and desires.
10. Appeal to the nobler motives.
11. Dramatize your ideas.
12. Throw down a challenge.
Nine Ways To Change People Without Giving Offense Or Arousing Resentment
1. Begin with praise and honest appreciation.
2. Call attention to people's mistakes indirectly.
3. Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.
4. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.
5. Let the other man save his face.
6. Praise the slightest improvement and praise every involvement. Be "hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise."
7. Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.
8. Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct.
9. Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.
You CAN'T instruct a man to be sincere.... He's either truley sincere or he's just full of crap.... I tell my sales people to be themselves.... but then again.... I actually hire them and I observe them, so I know if they've "got it"... or not pretty quickly.

Hey NBB.... I've never used my .45 as a tool to win an argument with anyone, that's not my style.Originally posted by IIC"Its real simple to win an argument with your wife: you just lay down the law, and that's that. You're the man of the house, aren't you"?...NewBorn
Newborn...Whoa!!!...Gimmee a break!!!...That's not how you do it...Let her win...Yeah...Admit you are wrong (Even when you aren't)...Tell her you always mess up..."If it wasn't for her...You'd be all screwed up"...Tell her "She's the boss...Without her you are nothing"...You gotta lot to learn...Women are people too...IIC
Doug, NBB did not say that your wife is not a "person". I'd say he highly respects women and probibly has a great marrage.... NBB simply asked Jim.... If he were the "man of the house"?....
IIC... Why would you lie to your wife and tell her "she's right even when she's wrong".... Is that how you've built a strong and trusting marrage?.... My wife would know better than to ask me to go to such a movie anyway because she's well aware of.... and respects my moral guidlines. Not to mention the context of such a movie makes her just as sick to her stomach as it makes me. Jim and his wife went to the movie because they BOTH are entertained by this discusting homosexual trash.... It takes two to tango.

.45 Auto
Jim,Originally posted by LyehopperHey Jim.... I can see you are a nice guy and not easily provoked.... cool.... you'll (most likely) learn to like this forum once you figure it out.
Now if you want to discuss with me "how to argue with your wife and win".... I'll be glad to instruct you. DUDE!!!! How old are you anyway?
Be careful here. LYE may just tell you about his .45 cure. You know, the .45 auto that wins arguments very often. I have heard that it can be unhealthy to play cards with this guy, too, so be aware of that.
Its real simple to win an argument with your wife: you just lay down the law, and that's that. You're the man of the house, aren't you?
Here's a look at LYE's Ace-in-the-hole:just click on this link. (By the way,
LYE is wearing Black and his new stock pick: FTL).

Hey Jim.... I can see you are a nice guy and not easily provoked.... cool.... you'll (most likely) learn to like this forum once you figure it out.
First of all the "top" threads are "Sticky's"... Do you see the word "Sticky" to the left of the thread?.... That means they can't be moved to the back unless the administration moves them.... The Sticky's are kinda like their own little forum....
The "Christmas Sticky's" are related to $$$ Mr. Market$$$'s last HUUUGE pick.... You see $$MM$$ has a special name for each pick....
First he has a "data dump" he posts that....
Then he has a "top five" he posts that....
THEN he reveals the actual HUGE "pick".... Does that make any sense?
All of the threads are programmed to cycle to the "top" as a new post it made. So when you make a post to any thread.... Your post automatically cycles that thread to the top.
It's very easy to find the thread you want.... Just scan down the list and find the thread you're interested in and click it....
Now if you want to discuss with me "how to argue with your wife and win".... I'll be glad to instruct you. DUDE!!!! I can't beleive you let her take you to that movie. How old are you anyway?Last edited by Lyehopper; 01-22-2006, 01:27 AM.

I'm not here to explain Mr. M's philosophy...He posts what he posts...Personally...I check the ones that he posts when he narrows down his list...Maybe some others check every single one...Maybe others only look at the one he decides to buy???Originally posted by Jim SmithI don't see many posts from Mr Market. Does he post much? I will post what I see and some days I think I see a lot, some days I don't.....As for the Christmas thread post, I thought maybe that thread was more seasonal in nature and probably wouldn't get anything new added to it so if I could move it to a back page I could quicky see more timely threads. No offense to MrMarket intended, I certainly have to give a Wharton grad his due.
I believe this forum is made up of all different types of investors...Some great...some good...some OK...some not that great...It is up to you to decide who posts info that may be of help to you IMO...DOUG(IIC)
