"...investors are making clear-cut distinctions between companies that are hitting their profit targets and those that are not.

Consider Advanced Micro Devices, the semiconductor company that posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter profit and picked up market share against major rivals. ex Dell's vice chairman on AMD board

                  http://news.com.com/Former+Dell+exec...1047_3-5566608 .html

                  EXCERPTS:

During his tenure at Dell, Topfer is said to have mentored chairman Michael Dell and to have helped recruit Rollins. Topfer shared the executive suite with the two men for a time before taking a seat on Dell's board.

Dell is the only major brand name in the PC business that does not use AMD chips in at least one product line. It is thus a major target for the Sunnyvale, Calif., chipmaker.

Dell executives have had more good things to say about AMD of late. They have praised it as a technology leader for moving standard PC processors to 64-bit addressing and for the speedy development of dual-core PC processors.

"I'm sure (AMD) will try to use him as leverage to bring Dell on board over time."

                      EXCERPTS:

Forbes has some interesting things to say about AMD, namely that in the next few years and beyond the company will surpass Intel in growth and performance, making them much more valuable.

Basing this on product releases and technology advances, the prediction also includes that AMD's 45nm manufacturing will be well ahead of Intels and that it will take a long time for Intel to catch up.

”Analysts are also predicting that Intel will not have the ability to catch up to AMD until Intel releases products on new 45nm fabrication processes, which isn't expected until 2008 claims Forbes. We reported earlier that AMD is transitioning its Fab 36 in Dresden to mass produce its next generation processors (both dual-core and quad-core) on a 65nm process. Intel on the other hand, has demonstrated that it has successfully started working on 45nm technology but its main production will be 65nm through to 2008.”

Not to be the critic, but I've been watching computer hardware for years and it's a running joke with many hardware/IT tech news sites about this Dell/AMD love affair.
I just don't see it happening any fast as you think.
