    Do trade deficits matter?

    TRADE DEFICIT ?

What about the Us Space program ?

How can anyone talk about the deficit and not put the space program in perspective?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Untold Billions are being spent there.............

Where does that money come from? .........
(Don't insult your intelligence and say taxes)

How come no one complains about that funding? .................

It always seems to be there .........

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
And for what , we have enough problems down here.
We will just pollute space with every thing we have polluted down here with anyway,
    That's where we are headed.

Well, the space program is a better place to spend the money than on "education."

No, no. The government gets money the same way goverments have always got it. They just print it. Bills or bonds, it's all the same dubious promise.

            What?
Are you saying that we import the space program from another country?

How does the space program have anything to do with the trade deficit?

              Here's the point
How could America be crying poor , crying broke , and that it owes money all over the place
throhght the so called trade deficit .

But still there is un-told billions being used for the Space Program

What does it have to do with the deficit you ask ? --------

              Well, the answer is
How about we use the money from the space program wherever it comes from and pay off the deficit.

              Doesn't that make sense ? .....................

We probably could pay it off in 2 or 3 years

So don't be fooled by America crying broke that it has no money to pay its bills .
              Its "phoey " I tell you .......

As long as there is Money for the Space program ....
There is enough to pay off the deficit

              -------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Heres some good news

The earth is already in space .. That makes all of us spacelings -
We already take up space like Dsteckler already pointed out in the above post .
              Like your thinking there ......

Perhaps not all discussions do benefit from facts, but this seems to be one that does.

                Untold bilions for space program:

                That is 16.5B for 2006.

                Size of the trade deficit:

Note: the numbers in this document are not cumulative, so for 2005 alone the deficit amounted to 723B. You do the math.

See also http://www.senate.gov/~hutchison/RL31032.pdf for a discussion of the trade deficit. From a cursory reading, it would appear that there are quite a lot of factors to consider. One of those is the GDP, currently at about 12,000B (derived from http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/...k/geos/us.html). Which, BTW, puts the deficit at about 6% of the GDP, and the NASA budget at 0.13%.

I don't find the 2004-2005 jump of over 100B in the trade deficit reassuring, but I am not knowledgeable enough to comment on it. Some kind of flattening of the growth curve would reassure foreign investors (I am one ).

                Regards,

I say you're barking up the wrong tree. U.S. spends as much on the Iraq War (but don't call it "nation-building" which Dubya formerly said he doesn't believe in spending U.S. resources on) in one month as NASA's annual budget. NASA is an extension of the U.S. military-industrial complex. It is an example of massive subsidization of some industries as well as a means of military expansion. Why is this news to you?
