This is going to be a new reality show on the weather channel starting April 2012. My son has been doing this for 2 years in Texas, Oklahoma, and now in Northwest Montana. He'd really like to work on turbines in Lake Erie, if they ever get built as he worked on boats around the islands for several years so it would combine 2 of his interests.

When my late husband was designing FRP chemical tanks and scrubbers, I once climbed about 75 feet up to the top of a tank on one of those straight up and down steel ladders and back down again. One rung at a time... No safety harness or ropes. Kept thinking to myself, what the H am I doing here??!!! The guys already on top kept saying, "come on B, you can do it." And I did, darn it!!! What a view from the top. Nothing like what your son is doing, but he's at least roped up.

River,
I think the rate of failure was around 15% for those that could pass all the requirements except the height and claustrophobia final. They are very strict about safety. There are no warnings if caught without safety harness or using bad procedure. In fact, at least one of the son's former classmates makes a good living just teaching safety courses to new trainees.

On April 22nd I'll be swimming 2000 yards in a fundraiser for the Diabetes Partnership of Cleveland. We've all been affected by diabetes as this disease has attacked our families, friends, and ourselves. This is the story of Mike, a childhood friend that lost his life to diabetes.
My Friend Mike
----------------We first met in late 1961 as hospital roommates. Mike had Juvenile (Type1) diabetes and I had broken both legs in an auto accident.
At first I envied Mike as he ran in and out of the hospital room and up and down the halls while I couldn't leave the bed. This all changed one day when he had a seizure and all I could do was yell for a nurse. At age 11 both diabetes and seizures were a mystery to me.
----------------Mike had a large family and I already knew several of his cousins and their parents from school and church. Luckily none of his sisters or brother had diabetes although his mother's brother who lived just down the street from me did. He was in and out of the hospital for years before dying at an early age.
----------------After several weeks we both left the hospital and I didn't see him again until 7 years later. We ended up at the same college and hung out in the same crowd. Hitting the bars on the weekends and going to concerts as college students often do we were shocked when Mike , out of the blue announced " I'm getting married next summer". He made a lot of bets and really cleaned up as it turned out he had a girlfriend for years at diabetes camp . Nobody knew about his fiancee , Sue.
----------------In 1971 Mike and Sue got married in Adrian, Michigan. A bunch of us were there and partied heavily although I can't remember much except for the cops raiding our motel room as we really raised some hell. Adrian was a dry town but they were happy to see us leave and didn't press charges.
----------------Mike and Sue bought a little house back in Ohio, had 2 sons and a daughter. He settled into a secure job at the Scott Paper factory. Several generations of his family worked there including his father and 2 uncles. All was well until "Chainsaw Al" Dunlap closed the plant, eventually selling to Kimberly Clark at the cost of thousands of jobs while walking away with 100 million in his pocket.
----------------He then turned a childhood hobby, coin collecting, into his livelihood. Opening a small coin shop he bought and sold coins, gold, silver, and baseball cards, hot items at the time. He told me he'd never live to see 40 so he sold items for a fast profit . No long term investments for him. Soon he was traveling the country setting up at shows in several states as far away as Hawaii. Returning home one day an old timer came into his shop with a complete set of baseball cards from the early 1900's. Mike said he closed up, went right to the bank, handed the man $8000 and sold for a big profit a short time later. He didn't have time to waste.
----------------I'd go into the store regularly to buy a few coins or just BS for an hour or so. Mike had serious eye problems that required retinal surgery. He never talked about it but would explain if you questioned him about it. I also noticed extreme weight losses and gains maybe a 50 pound
swing up or down. This was apparent if one went months between visits. Mike was now in his mid 30's.
----------------Although he rarely mentioned having diabetes and would never use his disability for personal gain, Mike was troubled by those trying to capitalize on their health problems, real or imagined. One time a couple parked in a handicapped spot near his store. It was apparent they were illegally parked . The temperature hovered near 0 and the sidewalks were snowy. Mike went outside asking if he could help them by throwing a bucket of water on the sidewalk to clear the way. He had an unusual sense of humor.
----------------One day I stopped by and the shop was closed. His brother told me had a stroke and couldn't speak. A couple months later he was back seemingly as good as ever.
----------------Mike made it a few years past 40 before dropping dead of a heart attack. He left behind his wife, a daughter in high school, and a son in grade school. Sadly, his wife, Sue died a couple years later.
----------------I knew Mike's parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Several are still living or lived to be in their 80's and 90's. Diabetes took 40 years away from Mike and Sue. There are thousands of Mikes and Sues in every state in this country. That's why I'm swimming for Diabetes on April 22nd. You can support me at this site. A pledge of even $1 will be appreciated. http://swimfordiabetes.kintera.org/f...upId=355721787

The Scream
"Traders may "Scream" for Sotheby's after record auction. Sotheby's (BID) may see some early action this morning after "The Scream," Edvard Munch's famous painting, sold for $119.9M last night, the most ever paid for a work of art at auction. Sotheby's share is $12.9M. Overall, Sotheby's sale generated $330.5M, the second-highest in the company's history. Opinion: Sotheby's: Bid with caution."
Darn it, I really wanted this one! Outbid again! Saw it in Oslo once and fell in love.
