    Modular or Pre-fab Houses

I'm looking into modular or pre-fab houses for a potential retirement home. There's lots of companies out there especially in Indiana. How can I find the best of them ? They all seem to conform to standards sometimes more stringent than stick built since they are shipped to many states with differing requirements. Any to avoid? Would like to hear from anyone with a good or bad experience. Thanks

      Doug,
About a mile from my house there were two lots for sale next to each other. They sold about the same time. One went modular and had a beautiful completed house in 72 hours. You would never know it was pre-built if you didn't see the sections delivered. Next door they went with stick built and were working on it for at least 9 months and it still doesn't compare to the neighbor's. I'd really like to know what the cost of each was.

I see nothing wrong with modular as long as you're not buying it to resale...and it doesn't sound like you are. Insurance might be one factor you might want to look into though. Of course, insurance may not be a problem like it is here in Florida.

Go ask the people living there...I'm serious...The worst that would probably happen is that they slam the door in your face. But I bet the one's w/ the Mod house would probably talk to you unless they are unhappy with what they got...Doug

I went through the All American Homes facility in Zanesville, OH. They
build a solid home. Here is the link to the PDF explaining how they build
            their homes.

My wife and I bought one from KanBuild based in Kansas about 8 years ago. They shipped a few hundred miles to my location. It was a two story modular and it has been great. The main issue with them at the time was they didn't have alot of fancy options.
