Week 17, Day 3
Week 17 - Settling Jamestown
Day 3 - building the town and walls
After the settlement was planned, and the crops planted, it was time to build the actual town and surrounding walls.
Karel was the head honcho for the design and construction of the ramparts
Rob led a group of men to build the supporting wall and trenches
Using a simple and efficient design, IIC brought together as many people were left to begin building the log houses one by one.
Lyehopper heard drumbeats off in the distance. New-born baby tried to hold back a cough.

I happen to have a copy of Jiler's original hardcopy book...But, although fairly basic...I recommend everyone have this book...Best $14 you'll ever spend:

Geometry and Common Sense

It was not my idea to build the fortress walls in a triangle. Although it does have certain advantages, I tried to get everyone to go for a square shape, which (aside from a circle) produces the maximum square footage per lineal foot of wall built.
For example, say you build 120 lineal feet of palisade wall (which is less than the number of lineal feet actually built in Jamestown, but this is just an example). A triangle with three equal sides of 40 feet each has an area of 692.8 sq. ft., whereas a square with four equal sides of 30 feet each yields 900 sq. ft. Thus you would increase the amount of usable square footage by nearly 30% even though you're building the exact same number of lineal feet of wall. Similarly a rectangle that is 20'x40' yields only 800 sq. ft. A circle with a 120' circumference, though, has an area of about 1,146 sq. ft. Now isn't that the most interesting thing you've heard all day?—Rob

To be honest, I didn't really think it up though. I remembered reading it in an article probably twenty years ago or more, and it stuck with me. I thought: okay, then why would anyone build a rectangular house, when you can build it square for the same money and wind up with more square feet? Of course it might make it more of a challenge to lay it out functionally, or one may need to squeeze some dimensions in order to comply with boundary offsets in the building codes, etc. But it is an interesting trivial fact nonetheless.—Rob

Week 17, Day 4
Week 17 - Settling Jamestown
Day 4 - Indian Interactions
Today we got a visit from the neighboring natives. They came in full war garb and tried to smoke a peace pipe with Rob. When he refused to smoke, they became insulted and began shouting and pointing at the ships. IIC stepped in and inhaled the whole pipe in one big puff without coughing. This impressed the redskins.
Lyehopper settled them down a little bit more when he threw a mud ball at them, but hit BoSox Jon in the face. The natives laughed at this and when RL broke out the wine, they really settled down. Sirtuck smoked the peace pipe with them and Riverbabe tried to join the circle, but the men Indians would not make room for her. Jiesen chewed on some tobacco leaves with a native named Ug. They became instant friends. Skiracer packed the next pipe
