Rev Shark's Short of the Week - WMB

The Rev Shark's Stock of the Week is a SHORT of Williams Companies, WMB.

According to Rev, "[O]ne of the best performing sectors for quite some time has been oil and gas. However now that there are signs that the economy may be slowing many of these stocks are starting to break down despite very low PE’s and excellent projected earnings. Many holders have big profits in this group and should the market stay under pressure, as we think it will, we are looking for profit taking to accelerate despite the apparently attractive valuations. In a poor market this sector has the potential to be a ‘value trap’ and will catch many by surprised who think that the good earnings will protect them.

One of the more expensive stocks in the energy sector is Williams Companies (WMB). Williams produces, gathers, processes and transports clean-burning natural gas to heat homes and power electric generation across the country. Natural Gas has been particularly weak for sometimes and has yet to show any inclination to turn up.

We will look to take a short position in WMB at current prices and will look to add to it further on a break below the 50 day simple moving average of 32.25. We will put a stop on the position at recent highs which is 34.25. "

WMB - at the close Tuesday

The Shark says that Tuesday the "short WMB, was weak once again for most of the day but bounced slightly into positive territory as the market ramped on the FOMC interest rate decision. The stock remains under the 50 day simple moving average and continues to look vulnerable. We took some partial profits today but continue to hold a postion. We'll put a tight stop on it to much sure we don't let our gains slip away."

Rev's Stock of the Week of Sept. 3-4th, VDSI

I am temporarily reviving this thread because the Rev's stock of the week is one most of us are familiar with, VDSI. VDSI is also #4 on Doug's (IIC's) IIC100 list for this week.

And I quote from Rev Shark's free site at www.sharkinvesting.com:

"Vasco Data Security, VDSI, is our Stock of the Week. VDSI develops hardware and software security systems. The stock has a stellar IBD rank of 99 relative strength and 99 eps and is an A+ rated group. Despite the recent market struggles it is trading just 60 cents or so off its closing high.

The key to this trade is going to be the overall market and we don’t want to buy unless we see strength and a move through the 32 resistance area on above average volume. If the market acts well the momentum investors should be quick to turn their attention to a stock like this but if the overall environment is mixed we would stand aside."

          And here is his chart:

          Trade smart, trade well. Riverbabe

            VDSI, Tues. evening

VDSI gapped up at the open "and kept on going all day on very good volume. This was a good day to be in a strong momentum stocks and VDSI filled the bill. After the close Louis Navellier added the stock to one of his model portfolios so, says the Rev, he wouldn't be surprised to see it open strongly again tomorrow" (Wed.).

According to Rev, "[t]he key now is to make sure you don't let gains slip away. Sell a little into strength and put a trailing stop on it so that you are assured of locking in some profits. However make sure you let a portion ride."

              VDSI Wednesday evening

Words of wisdom from Rev Shark at www.sharkinvesting.com free site:

VDSI "...gapped up and traded well today following a buy recommendation from Louis Navellier. The stock is now getting a bit extended and with the difficult market environment it is particularly important that you lock in some gains and keep stops very tight. Give the stock some room to see if it can continue its momentum but make sure you zealously protect your profits."

                VDSI - Thursday evening

From the Rev Shark: "VDSI...pulled back 98 cents today after a good two day move. The stock was a bit extended and due for some profit taking to kick in. This is way we like to take at least some partial gains into strength. The stock could use some basing action here to gain the strength for another move up. We'd keep a position with a loose stop at this point and give the trade some further time to develop."

Frankly, I'd have pulled out by now, on a short term trade with profits. I would look for another move up on the next Elliott wave. Riverbabe

                  Sophisticated Investors Take Heed

This Rev Shark's stock of the week is out of my league because I don't have enough experience with this type of investing yet. But I'm throwing it out there for those who know what they are doing! River

Rev Shark's Stock of the Week is a short of the iShares Emerging Markets Index ETF (EEM). According to Shark, "[t]his ETF has bounced strongly in the last couple weeks after breaking an uptrend that began in June 2006. We believe that the problems that are now cropping up in the US such as the weak employment we saw on Friday will start to frighten fragile emerging markets to a great degree in the week ahead."

He says, "[W]e want to be very careful with a short at this point because of the high possibility that the Fed will cut interest rates. We’ll be quick to take gains and fast to cut losses."

And, "I’d prefer to enter this trade on some strength. Ideally the 50 day moving average at 133 would be a good starting point. If we gap down on Monday morning I’d wait for some sort of bounce before putting on this trade. I don’t want to chase weakness here.

This is a highly volatile ETF and it is important to be patient and not hold size that will cause you to be whipsawed."

                    River,
My son just took off for college with my copy of Bix' recordings from 1927. Bought it at a church sale for 1.00 don't think it's ever been played. He took it before I got to listen to it. Was a re-issue maybe from the late '60's.

Well your son certainly has great taste in jazz!!! Am really thrilled that he would take that set, of all of them, with him. That was Bix at his best!

The only set of Bix's recordings from 1927 I have is Volume 3 of Masters of Jazz made in France in 1991, except for scattered examples on other CDs. So the one you have/had from the 60's was probably one of my friend George Avakian's reissues on Columbia records. He did the world a big favor when he published numerous reissues of great jazz artists at that time. The one I have starts off with In A Mist, composed by Bix and performed on the piano by him. I'm assuming that the reissue you had also included In A Mist. I tried playing that on the piano many times, but it was far too difficult for me to master.

I'm really impressed that your son likes Bix's music! Put him in touch with me and I will tell him everything he ever wanted or needed to know about Bix and his music friends, especially Tram, Eddie Lang, Paul Whiteman, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Hoagie Carmichael, and on and on and on! And you do know the original meaning of the term "jazz" (actually "jass")? Well, think "jass me baby" and you'll have it exactly! Riverbabe

                        river,
You've got to start a signature thread such as "Goin' upstream with River". Was listening to Bix today on a friend's '78 ,Vocalion #3149, Bix and his Gang----Since my Best Gal Turned me Down / Sorry . Also saw him on youtube with Paul Whiteman , but the quality wasn't so good. Do you have '78's of Bix ? I've got my Grandfather's Victrola that I coveted since sleeping in his attic in the 50's and playing "Camptown Races" and "Buffalo Gals", but I wouldn't risk damaging a good old record with the pig stabber needles it uses.

Now, that's not a bad idea (the signature thread), if Ernie and Karel would approve.

Wow! Bix and His Gang recorded both "Since My Best Gal Turned Me Down" and "Sorry" on October 25, 1927 at Okeh Studios

. Although the Vocalion #3149 side of Sorry is shown on my friend Albert Haim's www.bixography.com web site, the other side isn't shown. But that's a great recording your friend has. I think that Vocalion did pressings from the Okeh masters. (If you go to the site, scroll down, they're in alphabetical order..)

My late second husband had Bix '78s (10") that he bought for a nickel at the local Salvation Army and such stores after WWII. (He was a lot older than me.) I bought him a '78 player and we spent many happy hours listening to them. When he died, I had them appraised, but they were fairly common, so I gave them to his daughter (my step-daughter), along with the player. Now she enjoys them. She grew up listening to them. I am happy with the CD reproductions I have now. I need to look up that youtube production with Paul Whiteman! Didn't know it was out there! River

This week have a "friend of Bix" visiting me and we have been playing some old Bix tapes in the car while I've been showing him Cleveland. Happy you have the old Victrola! I coveted my great aunt's too, but have no idea where it ended up.

billyjoe, the NY Times has an interesting article today on genetic testing by 23andMe and 2 other companies. This is the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/17/us...html?th&emc=th

It's a good read. I still don't know about the investment potential here, but at least they are delivering as promised. River

The excuses alone might be worth the $1000. "I can't go with you, honey, my DNA says I die today". Mrs. billyjoe would probably figure out it's a scam pretty quick.
