Where can I get a list of ticker symbols?

So two things of concern here. First off, I'm extremely new to technical analysis, but I'm interested in beginning to write some programs to perform some analysis. I've recently created a Matlab program that will take a list of ticker symbols, then use Yahoo Finance to download historical data for those symbols over a user-specified time range. I don't know if any of you use Matlab or not, but if you're interested in this program then let me know.

That said, I was wondering if any of you know where I can get a list of current ticker symbols. The program I wrote can take in a .txt file of ticker symbols, but I haven't been able to find a place to download such a list. I can put them in manually, obviously, but I'd like to create quite an extensive list.

    Thanks!

I have lists of various ticker symbols on the Index Components page at my site http://SharpTraders.com

However...at home I believe I have a list of every ticker symbol...As I recall there are about 23,000 of them. I think I also have separate lists of Naz, NYSE and AMEX symbols....that would total about 7,500 symbols.

Let me know what you want and I'd be happy to send them to you...Best, Doug(IIC)

I've been experimenting with Visual Basic code and writing some functions for Excel and the advanced scans at StockCharts.com. You can write your own code for their scans and plug in anything you want to write. I have no experience with Matlab but would be interested in seeing the program and your work. Perhaps you could help me out with some other stuff. PM me and I can give you an email address or we can do it right here.
