I was just watching the charts looking for little p/b's and next moves...Unfortuanately, I keep getting interrupted by work...on some I put stops, but on others I just sell when I have to go. Picked up some on LEXR today...but not as much as I would've liked. Lost a few cents on PLMO again too.

        Overall, a nice week though...Thx

This is a little something I posted at another Forum yesterday:

There are literally hundreds of ways to try to project market direction...if I knew which one was the most accurate I'd probably be sitting on a beach in Bora Bora sippin' Mai Tai's right now.
But I thought I'd review a couple that I use(I also use many others) and you can decide for yourself whether they are worthwhile.

I'd also be interested in hearing how others try to project the direction.

The first 2 graphs are Nasdaq Advance/Decline Issue Oscillators for short term direction.

Notice the correlation between the A/D lines and the Naz movement. Especially, when the A/D crosses the red lines.

Here is the same type of Oscillator for Naz A/D volume. Notice that the A/D line never crosses the red lines for the time frame of this chart. But, generally when the line turns up the Naz goes up and when it turns down, the Naz turns down.

Here is a chart depicting A/D issues and A/D volume for the NYSE:

Dailygraphs also has indicators, which I won't post here, for the 10 day Moving Average of Up/Dn volume with separate lines for each. Interesting to note what happens to the market when they cross in either direction. They also have the same thing for New Highs/New Lows.

Of course you don't necessarily have to wait for lines to cross as you can see the daily direction.

Obviously these indicators are not foolproof...but they are helpful IMO.

If you don't have access to sites that show these types of oscillators...I have a few at http://MrBreakout.com you can plot them yourself. The formulas are very simple; e.g. To calculate the 12 day A/D issues line you simply subtract the declining issues from the advancing issues ignoring the unchanged issues( A-D) for the past 12 days. Total the positive and negative numbers for each day and divide by 12. On the following day, simply eliminate the first day and add/subtract the present day A-D and divide by 12...and just continue every day using a trendline.

Be sure that you get your A/D numbers from the same source as I see some fairly significant differences...which doesn't make sense to me, but that's the way it is. I use an average between Yahoo and Merrill Lynch myself.

You can do the same thing for volume and new highs/lows. You can also use any time frame you wish. A normal intermediate time frame would be 30 days.

One question that I get is..."The Naz A/D was negative but the line went up...How come"? The answer may be elementary to many, but I've heard it many times. Here is an example of how that can occur:

Let's say you are plotting 10 days. On the first day the Naz A/D was 1000/2300...A-D= -1300. On the 11th day the Naz A/D is 1300/2000 A-D= -700. Since you are now dropping the first day (-1300) and adding -700, the trend line will turn up even though we had a bad day. Be careful to watch for this.

Well, as I said, this is not foolproof by any means but hopefully some find it helpful...Best, Doug(IIC)

Because I am paid pretty well.

Also, the majority of my net worth is in a Real Estate Trust...This allows me to take risks on stocks that I probably would not take if I depended on equity gains to eat. Although, the way I'm investing now doesn't seem to pose a whole lot of major risk.

But I think I would have to change my investment style if I was full-time though...Now, I'm not saying I couldn't do it...So, if you are willing to fund it...I'm willing to give it a shot.

Well, we did dip a little below the 1970 level but I am pleased that we closed above it. On an encouraging note the volume in the last 5 minutes on the Naz Composite was triple any other rounded 5 minute period today and we went up 5 points....Doug

PS...I decided to sign up for the DGO R/T since they added Intraday...I'll let you know what I think of it.

Made .67 and .40 sh on VRSN early and .20 on HPQ...but just watched later in the day.

Hospitals sure doing well...maybe because of so much "Blood On Wall Street"
