Interesting day...I took the day off work and concentrated on trading. Traded STMP CYCL SPLS. But I cashed out before the FOMC...just to be safe.

Afterwards, Naz hit a ceiling right at medium resistance and then fell back...I decided to go take a shower and water the plants. I didn't bother watching the last 1/2 hr...But there was a small spike at the end, apparently due to the inadvertant omission of the long term inflation contained thing...Sounds like BS to me...we trust these jokers with running the economy and they can't even type the shortest announcement in memory correctly??? No wonder it takes 3 weeks to publish the FOMC minutes. (they will be released 5/24)...BTW...Here was theier original statement:

The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to raise its target for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to 3 percent.

The Committee believes that, even after this action, the stance of monetary policy remains accommodative and, coupled with robust underlying growth in productivity, is providing ongoing support to economic activity. Recent data suggest that the solid pace of spending growth has slowed somewhat, partly in response to the earlier increases in energy prices. Labor market conditions, however, apparently continue to improve gradually. Pressures on inflation have picked up in recent months and pricing power is more evident.

The Committee perceives that, with appropriate monetary policy action, the upside and downside risks to the attainment of both sustainable growth and price stability should be kept roughly equal. With underlying inflation expected to be contained, the Committee believes that policy accommodation can be removed at a pace that is likely to be measured. Nonetheless, the Committee will respond to changes in economic prospects as needed to fulfill its obligation to maintain price stability.

Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Alan Greenspan, Chairman; Timothy F. Geithner, Vice Chairman; Susan S. Bies; Roger W. Ferguson, Jr.; Richard W. Fisher; Edward M. Gramlich; Donald L. Kohn; Michael H. Moskow; Mark W. Olson; Anthony M. Santomero; and Gary H. Stern.

In a related action, the Board of Governors unanimously approved a 25-basis-point increase in the discount rate to 4 percent. In taking this action, the Board approved the requests submitted by the Boards of Directors of the Federal Reserve Banks of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, and San Francisco.

What Is your take on the banks In this environment? Intrest rates up they must make more money on all types of loans plus more money put Into CD's etc. I don't know how It works just the way It seams It should be.

Anyone that could catch what stock I ment should be able to answer this LOL

I think the way bank stocks perform versus interest rate changes can be pretty counterintuitive. Sort of the way a bond fund drops when the interest rates go up. You'd think that if the rates increase, your money will be making more money in the bond fund, but actually the bonds get cheaper because they were bought at a fixed interest rate which is lower than what you can buy now. Same is true for a bank, to an extent that they have a bunch of mortgages at fixed rates, which they were making a good spread from the low current interest rate.

Say a bank has $100M in fixed mortgages that they got for an average of 6%. At the time they got them the interest rates they paid on the deposits and short term CD's were 2%. That's a nice spread on the loans of 4%, or $4M per year, but if their borrowing costs go up (say the market rate goes to 4%) their spread now drops to just 2%, and their earnings are now just $2M (sounds eerily like a stock I own...). They can go and get new mortgages at 8% to make up for this, but in the meantime they're still stuck with all those old 6% loans they made before. So like a bond fund, the higher rates mean bigger profits, but later on. But short term, higher rates mean a drop in the current earnings and, as a consequence, IV of the investment.

I worked for B of A and Security Pacific for over 16 years...but I was in Real Estate.

Anyway...he's right...it is all about spreads.

But I posted an article about banks recently...I think they will have problems with the Cash Cow fees...they will be heavily regulated in the next yr or so IMO

In the morning I traded GLW TSRA ECIL...lost a bit on all three...took a break and actually went to work...Later I traded FTO KWK MCRS...did pretty good on those although I sold the first two too early because I had to go to a meeting...but such is life. Have to hit the road tomorrow at 11am EDT...might get a trade or two in...might not...IIC

                              Doug,
Coincidence that MAIN came up on your list of momo plays today. I have been watching it for a couple of weeks. Did it come up on one of your scans? My feelings are that it may turn out to be a good one.

My MoMo scan simply consists of stocks in the Top 5% of my RS database(which doesn't match others exactly 'cause they have more stocks in their database...I only have about 5,000...but it is consistently within 3 points)...that close up 2%+ on at least 1.5x ADV.

Some of the restaurants do look pretty good right now though and the group was up for the week after 3 down weeks...Doug(IIC)
