  • Is it IBD, Rummy or Congress? But yes, one of the three is ready to roll. I always wonder though: why would China want to obliterate their top trading partner? Just don't add up...

Doug, read your real estate take. You think it will take only ONE year... a lot more than my pessimistic 3 to 5, but I guess there are a lot of one year ARMs in the mix. That's some scary stuff. But if long term rates crawl, it'll be a bit of a reprieve, you think?

No...I just think it will start next year...won't happen all at once IMO.

Sounds like a way to prolong the agony to me...

GM to sell up to $55 billion in loans
Analyst lauds deal as 'big coup' for Bank of America
                By Shawn Langlois, MarketWatch
Last Update: 6:45 PM ET July 26, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- General Motors Corp. on Tuesday said it will sell up to $55 billion in auto loans to Bank of America Corp., a move aimed at raising cash while the automaker focuses on selling more vehicles.

Shares of General Motors (GM: news, chart, profile) jumped on the news, closing up $1.09, or 3%, at $36.96.

Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America (BAC: news, chart, profile) will make an initial purchase of $5 billion and will buy up to $10 billion in contracts a year over the next five years.

GMAC originates about $40 billion a year in U.S. auto loans, according to General Motors spokeswoman Joanne Krell.

GM Chief Financial Officer Sanjiv Khattri said the deal will allow General Motors Acceptance Corp. -- the parent's most profitable operation -- to finance more GM vehicles, without placing "undue strain on the balance sheet."

"This further advances GMAC toward its 'originate and sell' business model in U.S. auto finance, providing us far greater flexibility to reallocate capital and further diversify the business portfolio," he said in a statement.

                'Critical' for GMAC

GMAC has been a cornerstone of profitability for the world's largest automaker in recent years at a time when slumping car sales has cost the company precious chunks of market share.

In the second quarter, earnings from GM's lending division fell to $816 million from $846 million a year ago, as lower profit from financing was partially offset by the unit's surging mortgage and insurance sides. Despite another strong quarter for GMAC, GM turned in a loss of $286 million. See full story.

David Healy, analyst at Burnham Securities, said that the deal, while big in terms of dollars, doesn't come as a surprise and is in line with what GM has already been doing.

"This is an efficient form of financing since the company was closed out of raising money in the bond market when it was cut below investment grade," he said.

Separately, J.P. Morgan analyst Himanshu Patel reiterated his overweight rating on the stock and lifted his 2006 earnings target.

"By partnering with a third party bank, GMAC has secured another source of funding, a critical step as it attempts to maintain its size despite being junk-rated," he told clients in a note.

                A big leg up

For Bank of America, the deal opens the door to growth in its automotive finance business.

"In recent years, our deposits have been growing faster than our loans, and it's an opportunity to put more customer assets on our books," said spokesman Bob Stickler.

It's a good deal for Bank of America because it will increase the yield on the loan portfolio and boost its loan-to-deposit ratio, said analyst Dick Bove of Punk Ziegel.

"GMAC is now junk-bond paper, so Bank of America can fund these loans more easily and at a lower cost," he said. "The banking industry sees a tremendous opportunity to re-penetrate the auto industry. Bank of America scored a big coup here. They got a big leg up by cutting this deal."

Bove also predicted more banks would cut similar deals, with Ford Motor Co. (F: news, chart, profile) and perhaps with DaimlerChrysler (DCX: news, chart, profile) .

Bank of America shares finished down 13 cents at $44.53.
