The following table shows how the 416 companies that have reported performed in the third quarter, compared with analysts' average expectations.
                                By number By percentage
          Positive surprises 182 43%
          Positive reports 128 30%
          On target 44 10%
          Negative reports 36 8%
          Negative surprises 37 9%

(Positive and negative surprises include companies that deviated from expectations by at least 5%, with adjustments when the numbers are near zero and the percentage difference becomes meaningless. Positive and negative reports are from companies that deviated by less than 5%.)

The following table shows how the companies are doing against year-earlier results, with one company not reporting those figures.
                               By number By percentage
          Above year ago 342 80%
          Matched year ago 14 3%
          Below year ago 70 16%

First Call said 56, or 58%, of the 96 companies in the S&P 500 that provided previews for the fourth quarter as of Wednesday will miss analysts' mean expectations; 16, or 17%, expect to meet analysts' expectations; and 24, or 25%, anticipate they will beat the projections.
At a comparable time last year, 62, or about 57%, of the 108 companies in the S&P 500 that provided fourth-quarter previews warned of shortfalls; 23, or about 21%, anticipated on-target results; and 23, or about 21%, projected higher-than-expected earnings.

                Webs,
I, also was going to buy CSCO today and didn't realize earnings were coming out today. Thought about BA , but already have SAI then thought to buy CSCO but have GOOG so I thought I can get CSCO and sell by Christmas, make a fast profit and stay diversified. Then the wife dragged me away until 6PM and it's too late. Yeah, that's a good excuse. The wife is at fault.
