    i know one thing

and that is the market is going down alot farther than it is right now and so are the financials...all that garbage money being pumped into the system will just make the markets go down abit slower ...there is alot more trouble ahead..just think the fed pumped all that money in and the S&P 500 is just 6% off of the highs....that is just a little correction...there is alot more crap out there that we dont know yet and probably dont want to know....alot of these financial institutions are in serious trouble!!!...and all the fed did was devalue the US dollar ....which means ...Gold and metals are going alot higher.

“Wednesday marks 45 days before the end of the quarter, the deadline by which most hedge fund investors must notify the funds if they want to redeem their investments.” NYT

As if hedge fund investors do not have enough to worry about, a wave of redemptions could sweep over hedge-land in the next two sessions. Does this mean more funds will announce that since NAVs are incalculable redemptions are halted? If so, market reaction to these announcements may not be favorable.

          Dear Valued Client:

We'd love to send you your investment back...But we don't know what it is worth, if anything.

          Love,

Now it's hitting the money market funds!

From www.briefing.com: Follow up on Sentinel Management Group halt of redemptions

"As mentioned [earlier], the mkt has sold off after news that a lesser-known fund, Sentinel Management Group, halted redemptions in a money market fund... For people who are wondering who Sentinel Management Group is...according to a bio posted on gtnews.com, Sentinel has a base of over 150clients with assets under management of $1.5 bln (this bio is dated Oct 2006). So with ~$1.5 bln in assets under mgmt (as of 10/2006), the fund may not be a major player. However, the market was spooked because money market accounts are traditionally thought of as one of the "ultimate safe havens", and this is the first firm to announce it was halting redemptions."

And, "...If [the] market gets hit today and Sentinel becomes the headline news event of the evening, people will be at the banks tomorrow morning moving cash around. To a certain degree, this is good for banks b/c will lead individuals to move money from higher yielding accounts into lower yielding accounts, improving the spread for banks. However, don't think this is good for the market -- and the Fed will need to step in again to calm things down."

Ouch! I bailed on quite a bit this morning for a small overall profit, before the big hit. Good thing. Still have some red ones that need paring. River

              River,
CNBC this morning said the worst zipcode in the U.S. for foreclosures started with 44. Mine starts with 44 and it's bad around here but apparently worse in the Cleveland area. People don't want to take a chance to flip a property regardless of how inexpensively they can purchase because population is leaving the area in large numbers.

The reason for the foreclosures, IMHO, is that the banks saw an opportunity to lend to an otherwise usually overlooked population in the city at previously favorable rates. They (the banks) reaped the rewards, and the mortgagees could not escape the escalating interest with their variable rates. I know we've had population loss for many years now, but I thought it was mainly because of the (formerly or maybe still) rotten school system, the worst in the whole country. I have to confess I don't read the Plain Dealer (shame on me)! Too depressing and not worth the 50+ cents I would have to spend on it. Flipping in the areas that are affected, again IMHO, wouldn't be able to attract able buyers simply because of...well, the conditions in the areas that are affected. There is some urban renaissance/renewal going on in downtown now, but it's sure no "Chicago" or any number of other cities you could name. So why do I live here? There is only one reason I still live here. I'll be happy to pass that on privately. Riverbabe

NY Fed Cites Technical Problem In Canceled RP Operation
                    .
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--In an unusual move, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Wednesday announced an overnight repurchase agreement, then canceled it, and announced again that it was implementing an overnight operation.
The Fed cited technical problems in the canceled operation.
The New York Fed had said earlier that "preliminary estimates suggest that an overnight RP, which would be conducted at the Desk's normal operating time of 9:30 a.m., will be needed to accommodate heightened reserve needs typical on a Treasury mid-quarter refunding date."
It went on to say that "in addition, the Desk stands ready to conduct further operations later in the day if needed."
The central bank's overnight target rate was trading on target at 5.25%. Open market operations are the Fed's tool to achieve its monetary policy objectives, and involve borrowing and buying a mix of Treasurys and other fixed-income securities.

                      Doug,
It's the fault of "short termism". I wonder who they are talking about.
