    Master Limited Partnerships

I was doing some research & stumbled upon MLP's (Master Limited Partnerships) I was wondering if anyone knew if there is any tax differences in these if investing with them in a IRA. The 2 that I am looking at are: DEP & ETP. They are traded as stocks & have a good dividend payout. I know the IRA is tax differed, but are these MLP's treated any differently?

    Gary,
I owned a limited partnership stock both inside and outside of an IRA. It was a little complicated figuring the taxes since they sent the w-2 after April 15th and it wasn't all taxable as div. from regular companies. Within an IRA I'm sure you just pay taxes on everything when you take distribution after age 59 1/2 since you didn't pay taxes on the money put in initially. Of course with a Roth you'll pay nothing since you paid the tax on it already before investing.

Most MLP's do really well in environments where interest rates are declining.

Thanks, I would think it is treated the same as a stock in an IRA, some of these MLP interest rates are nice, I've been reading up on them & they are being treated like REITs were when they were a new type of investment vehicle. I always try to put some of my moola-shmoola in an interest type investment, am considering an Apple REIT; but at this point undecided.

I did a quick google and stopped when my eyes started to glaze over from the complications that seem to accompany MLPs in IRAs. The taxes (plural) do NOT seem to be deferred. But please don’t take my word for it.
