Copper wire usually contains 88-94% pure copper while a pre 1982 penny has 95%.

        Ski,
That's a great price for scrap. If you want it out of your life, sell.

I've finally passed the 600lb. mark in copper. Actually 602.74lbs. That is about 88,000 pennies or 30% of the 294,000 I've gone thru to find them. At current copper price of about 3.50/lb it totals $2042 or 1.16 per roll with 1760 rolls and 146 pennies from 1909-1982 per pound.

The old saying is "the first 600 pounds is the hardest" Hope to hit 1000 pounds by Dec.31st but it will be tough. The son's bedroom floor isn't cracking yet but it isn't easy for this old man to carry those 65.75lb boxes.

As for rare or valuable pennies, not much. I've found a nice 1909 and 1 Indian head penny 1902. I'll bet Mr.Market could carry a box in each hand while balancing a large draft beer on his stomach.

my electrician friends just finished wiring another bdgs meters and gave me a pile of 3'/4' pcs. of 1/4" to 1/2" clad wire. got to be around 75 lbs. there. i have got to get this pile i have to the scrap yard.
I just bought a few rolls of the new Lincoln Cent Coin two roll set "Preservation of the Union" uncirculated rolls. there are 4 sets, the one i mentioned and "the Presidency" and his "Professional Life" series. i dont know what the 4th set is going to be yet but will be available in another 3 months. this is a limited time offer and will not be put into circulation so unless you get them now you wont be able to get them unless you buy them from someone else that has extras.

Passed the 700 lb. mark in copper pennies today. That's about 102,000 pennies I've saved out of approx. 350,000 looked at. I've got a new batch of 5,000 waiting to be searched. At just about .02 melt value , there's about $2040 of pennies and 2040 rolls just above my head right now. Maybe I'll move the computer just in case. I tell the wife I can look at my IRA contribution this year just by opening up the bedroom door.

Also found a near uncirculated 1970 s small date cent worth maybe $50 a couple weeks ago. Plan on quitting at 1000 pounds copper.

You should shoot for 2,105.26 lbs. At 95% purity, that would give you 1 ton of copper. It would also be equal to approximately $3082 in face value of pennies. In today's market, the copper content would be worth approx $6,100 ($3.05 per lb price basis)

How do you store them? boxes, buckets, bags?

                    Peanuts,
I store them in very strong cardboard boxes from Aldi's that are smaller than a beer box but hold 62.29 lbs. which is 192 rolls per box. Talk about dead weight!

                        Peanuts,
Everytime the wife thinks I'm crazy there's always somebody worse. This guy won't get anyone to pay the minimum bid unless copper spikes up real quick. I'd much rather have a million dimes, then you'd be talking some real $$$. Meanwhile I'm up to 789 pounds copper. I need a machine that sorts for me but it would take all my potential profits.

Up to 810 pounds of copper cents. That's approximately 118,260 pennies or 2365 rolls worth $2365 if current price of copper is 3.00/pound. Only 190 more pounds and I'm retiring from the copper business.

I'm up to 904 pounds copper cents, that is 132,000 pennies at 146 per pound. At current copper price of 3.45/lb the bank is giving me $3.28 in copper for each $1.46 I give them in junk coin. Figuring a 30% rate of copper cents in the general circulation, I've looked at about 440,000 coins.

The 132,000 total doesn't count the hundreds, maybe thousands of wheat ear cents (pre-1959) I've squirreled away. They currently sell in bulk for .04 each. Next report at 1000 pounds copper.
