Can Anyone ID This Movie For me

This is off topic but this forum is full of more curious, well-informed, varied interest types than any other I know.

I saw this movie a while back, made about 1950. British, or at least British characters. It was about a middle-aged man, a shrink or psychologist with a very prosperous practice, a distinguished gentleman type with upper-class pretensions.

After about 20 years of marriage his wife introduced him to a girlfriend of hers, a somewhat younger, very attractive woman. The wife was called away for a period of weeks and the man began an affair with the wife's friend. The wife returned and found out about the affair, something which would cause great scandal for them in their society. So they decided to remain married but he would go away and travel in Europe with his mistress.

While they were on this trip the man observed his mistress talking to a younger man, someone her age. Disturbed, he saw the hand-writing on the wall and soon his mistress left him for the younger man. He went back home and figured he would try to make up with the wife but feeling the fool he took the elevator to the top of their building and jumped off. He was critically injured but was put to bed in his own apartment.

Anyway the mistress showed up and asked to see the man lying near death and the wife said what the hell and the woman went into his room alone and stayed for quite some time. Finally an outraged friend said enough and went toward the room to throw the woman out. Just then she came out of the room and when asked how the man was, said rather casually that he had died some time past and she had been sitting with him privately mourning (with the wife outside) and then she walked out.

If you have any idea what movie this was I'd really like to know.

Yup. Thank you. I don't know why I want to see this again, it's depressing. It is kind of interesting. He cheats on his wife and that's supposed to be OK, at least it is with him, but when the woman cheats on him he denounces her and then his life comes apart.
