Low-cost carrier JetBlue Airways Corp. JBLU witnessed a significant improvement in air traffic in the month of October, this year. Traffic – measured in revenue passenger miles (RPMs) – came in at 3.4 billion, up 11.8% from 3 billion recorded a year ago.

On a year-over-year basis, consolidated capacity (or available seat miles/ASMs) increased 11.1% to 4 billion. However, the load factor or percentage of seats filled by passengers increased to 84% from 83.5% in Oct 2014. The greater increase in traffic compared to capacity has led to the expansion in load factor. Similarly, PRASM (passenger revenue per available seat mile) in the month dropped 2% from the last-year period.

For the first ten months of 2015, JetBlue generated RPMs of 34.5 billion (up 9.8% year over year) and ASMs of 40.6 billion (up 9.4%). Further, the load factor improved 30 basis points year over year to 84.9%.

Meanwhile, the launch of the Mint service has boosted traffic for JetBlue. Over the last one year, the service has gained considerable popularity as it offers passengers premium services like private suites, more leg space and cozy seats at affordable rates.

JetBlue has launched flights between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Antigua's V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU). The carrier has also been actively expanding its network by connecting cities like Lima, Peru and Bogota in Latin America, with Cartagena and Medellin in Colombia.

Hence, we believe that increased flights, route expansion in Latin America, low fares, launch of new services and increased demand have supported the upside in JetBlue’s October traffic figures.

In sync with its seasonal plans, JetBluehas announcednon-stop flights between Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). Meanwhile, in order to boost its Florida gateways during winter months, the company has decided to operate 95 flights daily at the FLL Airport.

Moreover, the carrier plans to flag off two daily non-stop roundtrip flights between Nashville International Airport (BNA) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). The company also intends to run a daily non-stop roundtrip flight between BNA and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

Enhanced flight connectivity coupled with low fares enhances traveling options for passengers, which in turn boosts revenues for JetBlue.
