    Li'l Christmas Stuff

Lyrics in case your German is a little rusty. I know mine was.

    Ave Maria

    Ave Maria

I want delts like her. A few other body parts too.

Yesterday I tried to upload (didn't work) pictures of my 15 year-old granddaughter in her brand new dirndl that I bought her for her high school presentation of her German family history. She's getting a cuckoo clock from the schwarzwald for Christmas. Thank you US dollar! Danke!

Still searching for a gift for that hard to shop for person (or yourself)? How about an electronic subscription to the New Yorker. They have images online of every weekly issue they have published since 1925. North of 4500 issues. What was actually written after the 1929 crash, during the depression, WWII, etc. Just looking at the ads, the clothes they wore (I started reading in 1925), the entertainment since there was no TV, car ads for the LaSalle (remember the Archie Bunker theme song) and the Packard, the prices of things, getting stuff COD. Blew my mind. $12 for 12 weeks.

about 6 months before the first Christmas

Some travel thoughts on the Visitation about 6 months before the first Christmas

Ein Karem, situated on the western slopes of Jerusalem, has special significance as the home town of Zechariah and Elizabeth, the parents of John the Baptist, and the place of the Visitation, where Mary the mother of Jesus visited her cousin Elizabeth before John’s birth.

The normal means of transportation was walking. There is no record that Mary the Mother of Jesus ever rode a donkey! It is not mentioned in the Scriptures but it is mentioned in the second-century Christian writing, "Protoevangelium of James", chapter 17. So, riding on a donkey is a very early Christian tradition.

After she was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Mary traveled from Nazareth to Ein Karem, in the hills near Jerusalem where Elizabeth, her cousin, was pregnant with John the Baptist. This is a distance of 90 miles. At 20 miles per day, it would have taken 4-5 days.

Along the roads there were no toilet facilities, water or other travel needs. Life was tough in those days for the traveler. In the summer time the heat could reach up to 120 F. and in the winter there is often snow along that route. The way included mountains, valleys, rivers, desert and wilderness. There were bandits and killers hiding along the wayside. For those who could afford it, a donkey was brought along to help carry supplies.

Mary then traveled back to Nazareth (she was approximately 6 months pregnant now, having stayed 3 months with Elizabeth until John was born). Then, with Joseph, she traveled back south of Jerusalem to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus. During all this travel of approximately 300 miles, Mary was pregnant with Jesus!

Interesting little "tart" with connections to Ohio.

Keeping with the Ohio connection, the home and final resting place of "Lemonade Lucy" is just a few miles west of me. A museum on the grounds of her estate featured an exhibition of drawings showing the evolution in drawings of Santa Claus from the 1840's to our modern day conception of the big man (not Mr.Market). Can you identify Lemonade Lucy without looking it up?

'Nuther of my favorites. Grizabella, The Glamour Cat (Elaine Paige), now well past her prime and previously having been rejected by the other kitties, attempts a rapproachment. Initially the others literally turn their backs but, after listening to her lament, turn back. Finally two kittens, Jemima (Veerle Casteleyn), the other soloist, and Victoria (Phyllida Crowley Smith), the shiny grey kitty, make welcoming overtures.
