This is what I did: Got a good job that had a pension plan and a 401k. Put the maximum into an IRA every year. Got lucky big time on a few stocks. Cut monthly expenses as much as possible. Now, with the small pension and social security and the minimum required distribution from the IRA and the rolled-over 401k, I can live comfortably month to month. For unexpected expenses, I use an LOC on my house as an ATM. Good luck!
