Well, I've had fun (mostly) being the scorekeeper. I'll post the full year spaghetti chart either later tonight or sometime this weekend.

And ... oh yeah ... by the way, mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the hugest of them all? The player with the highest average score for the whole year is .... [Drumroll please] .... ROB! How about that for hugeness, ladies and gentlemen?

p.s. Slight mix-up on the color chart at the bottom. Billy's score should be silver and Pete's the bronze ... and I'm too tired to fix it ... so you can just mentally switch the colors.

Wow...that's a pretty telling table, but not surprising. On such a short term basis its hard to pick any real winners. Maybe I'm reading that table wrong, but doesn't it say, why bother with such an insignificant game especially when it yields very little in the way of useful info? Or maybe I'm missing the point all together..ie that this is a game to most here to be played at work?

I think that you're right in your assessment of how most look at the game. My feelings are that I like to own them if I'm going to play them. For a short term swingtrader like myself and some others the one week time period suits our discipline and strategy. Peanuts posted last week that no one was talking about stocks, posting charts, and in general the commentary was light on the stock talk. He, and most everyone except JBlaze and Whiz, missed two great opportunities in the short play on MAMA and the long positions on MED and AOB. I made several posts on each over the course of the last 8/9 days and not a peep out of anyone. Personally I could care less about winning the POTW but owning them, even if someone else wins that week like with MAMA and MED, when they are in the green is worthwhile. Up 2.41 with the MAMA short play and still holding and up 1.90 with MED which I exited Friday morning. Now looking for another entry in MED on Tuesday.
It's really only a game and probably should be looked at in that mannner, but in reality there are alot of decent selections in that group of stocks if one takes the time to access them properly. Pete brought MAMA to the game and to my attention thru the POTW. I have 2000 shares of it short from 7.30. You have to be happy with that and it came directly out of the POTW. Thank you Pete and Happy New Year.
What I am concerned about is the slackening of commentary on stocks in general whether it be technical or fundamental in nature. It seems that the space is being taken up more and more with general conversation threads which is good if that is what you want this site to evolve into but I miss the specific stock talk and the volume of it that we have had in the past. People will lose interest in anything if they are not getting what they are looking for in anything they spend their time on. The writing could be on the wall.
        JBlaze,
Congrats on a great win. I was rooting for you all week. I can only wish that the percentages had been higher. Billyjoe and Pete. Great plays this week. Congrats to both of you. Pete, thanks for bringing such a great play to my attention with MAMA!

          Long live the POTW!

I think the info in the scorecard is very useful.... It proves that it's difficult to make consistant (average) gains when short term trading and when trading many different stocks.... Rob came out on top with the best overall average this year and he (nearly) always played stocks he owned and played the same three or four stocks pretty much all year.... btw, Rob also had the most #1 finishes too.... Personally, I've learned alot from this "useless" contest....

But all-in-all the POTW is indeed "just a game".... I think it's fun to play and it's satisfying to attempt to pick a real short term mover (long or short)....

Thanks for the HUGE! effort this year Rockin'Rob.... And to all who took the time to play and contribute your well researched picks....

I hope the POTW will continue to prosper under Peanuts watch and maybe we'll all fare better next year!

Congratulations to JBlaze and Peter Hansen and thanks to Rob, Ski, Lye ,and everyone who helped keep this thread going especially the contestants of whom there must have been at least 30 different people throughout the past year. I'm sure Peanuts will keep this thing going and improve upon it. He's certainly got more energy than me and a couple more of you old codgers. I won't mention any names. Ok, Peanuts.........on to greatness.

              Billyjoe,
You had a great idea when you started the POTW thread and the proof is in the pudding. Look at how it has grown in the number of contestants playing each week. Lye and Rob really deserve most of credit for building it into what it is today. A number of us were custodians for short periods of time but it was their ingenuity that put it over the top especially Lye's determination in building up the player base during his tenure.
I think Peanuts and his natural exhuberance will provide more than enough new ideas and sustainable interest to keep it going. We should all try to contribute more to the POTW and Ernie's site in the hope that it will continue to thrive and grow as it has up to this point.

Oops! I need to make a correction! BillyJoe didn't sit the rest of the contest out. At 12:28 p.m. he went long AAPL at 85.07!

AAPL closed at 84.84, giving Billy a loss of 0.27%, taking his net total to 6.17% instead of the 6.44% as reported.

Sorry about that, Billy. The good news is that it didn't change the standings, and you still won the silver in the final week.

What cruise are you going on? We are going on The Diamond Princess to Mexico from 1/13 to 1/20...This will be our 19th cruise but our first on Princess...There are good deals in January.

We are also going on a 4 night cruise in May from L.A. to Vancouver on the Sapphire Princess. Great deal as they reposition for the Alaska season. Then we'll spend a couple of days in Vancouver and fly home.

I've got some tricks to get cheap prices on cruises if anyone is interested...Doug

                          Peanuts,
Does rule #4 prohibit playing an ETF or are you just suggesting that we don't pick one for a play?

If you absolutely MUST play an ETF, then do it. It is a stock-picking contest, so be prepared to get poked and prodded, made fun of and laughed at, repeatedly crushed and maimed, or tarred and feathered if you decide to play an ETF.

                            How exciting

I was just looking for a clarification of the rules since you are now the rulemaster. Rule #4 was alittle vague and I was just looking for a clearer definition of the rule which you so aptly provided. You should change the wording of that rule to specifically state that ETF's are allowable and fair plays according to the rulemaster and then you wouldn't have to go thru that spiel ever again. But thanks for the clarification an I look forward to the consequences of playing my first ETF when it comes to that.
