To clarify, the guy offering me the Korean cigarette was not offering me a Korean Marlboro Light... it was a Korean brand that I cannot remember.

I've never had cigarette in a foreign country that I could stomach...I didn't start smoking till I was done with college sports...I smoke Parliament Lights 100's...Soft Pack...I can't even take the ones in the box...Sometimes I think if they stopped making the exact ones that I smoke that I would quit...But probably not.

Well...at least I don't smoke in the house...My wife would kill me if I did....Plus, I wouldn't want the odor in my house anyway.

Have you ever seen cigarettes sold in the US that have "Not for sale in the US...For export only" or something to that effect?...I've bot some from some little store and I won't take them...Of course, the store owner buys them underground sans tax...But the exact same brand with that printed on it tastes nothing like the ones produced for sale in the US...The export only varieties are much stronger/harsher.

Those Korean Marlboro Lights probably tasted like Bull Durham no filters here.

I've been to China several times. I also used to smoke cigarettes (a habit that I am happy to have kicked, and wish the best to those who are trying to do the same) Of course, I sampled the local flavors while in China and couldn't really find any that match the Marlboro Lights to which I had become accustomed. The flavor of the Chinese cigarettes were woody and biting to the tongue; not at all enjoyable, in my opinion.

This might mean something to the traveler to China, but the following anecdote might mean something more to future Phillip Morris International investors: I was in the lobby of my hotel musing over the censorship blatantly exhibited in the local English written newspaper when I noticed another person doing the same while enjoying a cigarette of a brand that I had not yet tried. I motioned to him if I could have one of his smokes and offered a Marlboro Light in kind. He gave me his cigarette and told me that they were from Korea, and raised his eyebrows. As I tried to give one of mine to him, he shook his head and refused the smoke with a bad look on his face. My offer was rejected. Chinese customs are different than what most of us are used to... he rejected the Marlboro Light in disgust.

The Korean cigarette wasn't much better than the Chinese brands that I had sampled. It makes me wonder whether the rest of this large consumer market feels similarly to the stranger with the Korean cigarettes, and just how big of a piece of the Chinese pie PMI will actually get.

as a side note: I'll be going to India soon. Maybe I'll have to pick up some of their cigarettes and have them tested by my friends that might enjoy them? And maybe I'll have to offer a Marlboro Light to some smoking Indians. Personally, I've now moved onto enjoying cigars on occasion. The Philippines has some great tasting hand rolled brands worth sampling.

Nice analysis and great experiment over the long haul, billyjoe. It's an eye-opener and mostly confirms what a lot of people have suspected that happens to these stocks. I know I have been burned too many times by low priced stocks - think PRZ, PXPL, MCZ - to name just a few. (Wonder how Poormans is doing these days.) Thanks for keeping track of these! Good job! If you had bought all the picks each month, sold all that dropped 10%, bought the new list each month, and rolled over the $$, you would have gained 17.93% not counting trading costs.

These stocks seem to be controlled by the whims of the market more so than larger caps, regardless of the quality of the companies. Only a very small % can withstand the drops in an unstable or depressed market. I'm going to concentrate on higher cap stocks from now on. Those that can hold up, at least for more than a couple days of a market downturn.
