    ski,
What would be your top candidates to overtake Micky ? I can't see the gold stocks going up that much more before year's end and Lye's ECOL may have a hard time making a big move also. Just curious as to your thoughts. I predict a greater move for electric than oil in the final 5 months of the year so ABB would be my pick.

I think Mickey's BWNG will take the gold this year.... At this point I sure hope it does. This stock is a real winner imo.

        Billyjoe,
I like ECOL, VLO, and GLD. ECOL is in a great business. They will do business in that field regardless of the economic climate. VLO is in the refining business. With oil an energy going up the producers of the products, refineries, stand to benefit the most in my opinion. They aren't building any new refineries and it looks like we are going to have to get by with what refining capacities we have. They actually have everyone over a barrel. Gold is being used in much more than just jewelry. In the increasingly volitaile world that we live in gold and silver are becoming the safe haven of choice. I bought the ETF at $46 thinking that $52/55 would be nice. It's been over $70 and seems to have settled in at this $60/65 range for the time being. I'm not hoping for any escalation of war in the mid-east but there are alot of crazies on both sides. It's not beyond my thinking that someone on the Arab side get's their hands on a nuclear device and detonates it somewhere. That would change the whole complexion of things. Especially regarding currencies and precious metals. BWNG's product line is not an esscential must have product. It is more sensitive to economic swings than the other two in my opinion.

If the cost of oil continues to go up then VLO is in the drivers seat. GLD would also benefit in that scenario. Both of them going up means a worsening economic situation for everything else price wise. ECOL will do business regardless. If oil stabilizes or goes down substantially then GLD and VLO will follow suit and ECOL would end up the stronger of the three. Nothing is written in stone an it is going to take some time to see how it plays out over the remainder of the year. Amazing that we are in the 8th month of the contest already. Anyway just how I see things possibly materializing.
Any other takes on how this could play out from here.

                Mr Market Stock Contest 2006

                Close on 8/11/2006

                Ray is $$$HUGE$$$...This week Anyway

Another cr*ppy week for the contest portfolio...The only bright spot was Ray's GHM +5.86%

Our A/D/U for the week was a miserable 5/21/0 but our YTD A/D/U remained at a 11/15/0 as nobody went red or green for the second consecutive week.

YTD our total portfolio is still red at -6.52% as we were down 2.32% for the week. The CSSGX had another lousy week and now stands at -9.85% YTD...Who wants to start a pool to guess how long this fund will be around?...I'll bet they don't last 2 years from the date of inception last September. You can see their top holdings as of 6/30/06 here:

Wow...98% invested at that time...Maybe they should check my ribbon chart below???

I use the open on 1/3/06 for the indices and the close on 1/3/06 for the CSSGX because funds are only priced at eod.

                  Doug,
CSSGX has to be an embarrassment for IBD. A truly miserable performance considering that it's diversified and backed with years of research and untold dollars. It's time for them to rethink their ways.

                    • Because of the longer timeframe involved in a Pick of the Year, I can't at all use my typical stock picking techniques. Just before the beginning of 2006, I had traded DDD (sustained release technology for drugs) for a gain, but found out that the company's real future is probably tied to new announcements that will surface later in 2006. That's my hope for now. So for me, DDD's a 100% "story stock." I'm hoping DDD will be at 10.00/sh by end of 2006.

                            Ninner is $$$HUGE$$$ This Week

And so were a few others...Ninner's ADAM was +18.5%, Your's Truly was +16.9% w/ IDWK, Photon's WFMI was +13.9%, Mimo's ENER was +12.2%, Mickey's BWNG was +11.1% as he runs away from the pack again and Karel's CELL was up 10.3%.

Our A/D/U for the week was a respectable 18/7/1 but our YTD A/D/U remained at a 11/15/0 as nobody went red or green for the third consecutive week.

YTD our total portfolio is still red at -2.86% as we were up 3.91%% for the week which sounds pretty good until you realize the Naz Comp. was up 5%.

The CSSGX was up 0.63% in its quest to find green one of these days...Wonder if I'll live long enough to see it? They are now 22.5% off their May 9th high...Heck, I coulda lost that much on my own. According to MSN Money they now have almost $82 mil. under mgmt...Anyone here own any?

I use the open on 1/3/06 for the indices and the close on 1/3/06 for the CSSGX because funds are only priced at eod.

                                Mr Market Stock Contest 2006

                                Close on 8/25/2006

Mickey is still $$$HUGE$$$ as he increases his lead even when BWNG is down for the week

Top Dawg for the week was Sleddawg's FORD up 16.90% followed by Ninner's ADAM at +10.94%.

Our A/D/U for the week was a respectable 16/10/0 but our YTD A/D/U remained at a 11/15/0 as nobody went red or green for the fourth consecutive week.

YTD our total portfolio is still red at -2.15% although collectively we were +0.73% for the week as all the indices we track were red.

The CSSGX was -1.62% as its YTD loss is now over 10%...There's really not much to say about this fund anymore. Maybe it is a waste of time even tracking it???

I use the open on 1/3/06 for the indices and the close on 1/3/06 for the CSSGX because funds are only priced at eod.
