I graduated from HS in 6/71...I was in the Junior Olympics in the Summer of '70 in Knoxville...I got blown out in the Prelims of the 440...But our California team won the 4x220 relay...I ran the second leg.
After my Senior year in HS I was in the National Junior Championships in Bowling Green Ohio...I made it past the prelims in the 100...but I came in 6th in the Final...I won the Gold in the 440 though.
I tore a hamstring real bad when I was a Sophomore at Nebraska at a meet at San Jose State...That pretty much ended my career...There was a bit more after that in Hawaii...But I was through...I refused the operation...But I have no problems with my leg now...I was lucky though because the damage was not at the knee or hip.(Connections)
My best times through my Frosh Year at college were:
100...9.5/10.4
220/200(Curve)...21.3/21.0...Heck...I ran 21.5 when I was a Jr. in HS...#2 Jr. in the nation(Check T&FN)...although there were a couple of Sophs that had better times in '70.
440/400...47.9/47.3...But I never trained for that...If I had...this would have been my best event...But I was too lazy to be honest with you.
60yds...6.2(Indoor)
300yds...30.7(Indoor)
Bob went to USC...I saw him a lot as a pre-teen as I went to many USC and UCLA track meets with my Dad back then...But I don't remember actually meeting him. Track was BIG TIME back then...Not so anymore though.
In conclusion...I could have been a lot better than I actually was...But my success early...As I ran 9.9 as a 9th grader and 51.3 w/o even trying(The 9th grade record was only 50.3 at the time)...went to my head...Thought I was
TOO good...Well, I wasn't...I should have actually worked at it...But a good lesson for later life...Nothing worth having or doing is easy...Live and Learn...And yes...I learned some valuable lessons from it...Doug(IIC)
