        Capital Gains and Losses

        Last Day to Sell

        By Kaye A. Thomas

What's the last day you can sell your stock and still report the gain or loss in the current year? The answer is the last trading day of the year.

        Trade date controls

When determining what year you sold your stock, thetrade date is what matters. This is the day the transaction took place on the stock exchange. If you contact your broker on the last trading day of the year, you can complete a sale in the current year if your broker executes the trade that day. On major exchanges, the last trading day is December 31 unless that day falls on a weekend.
        Settlement date

Stock market trades generally settle a few days after the trade date. This is the day shares and cash actually change hands. But the settlement date doesn't matter for purposes of determining when your sale took place. If your trade date is in the current year and your settlement date is in the following year, the tax law says you made the sale in the current year (year of the trade date).
        Different rule for short sales

If you're closing a short sale, any loss you have on the closing transaction is treated as if it occurs on thesettlement date, not the trade date. That's becausedelivery is generally the event that closes a short sale. If you need to report a loss from a short sale in the current year, be sure to act early enough so the transaction settles by December 31.
What about gains from short sales? A June 2002 ruling from the IRS says the constructive sale rule applies when you close a short sale at a gain. That's because for the few days between the trade date (when you're treated as having bought the replacement shares) and the settlement date (when your short sale is actually closed) you're long and short the same stock. That means you have to report gains from short sales on the trade date, not the settlement date.
        Confused?

It's this simple: use the trade date to determine which year you have gains or losses from sales of stock. When you're closing a short sale, use the settlement date for losses but the trade date for gains.

Twins born in different years - I thought there was only one set of twins but it turns out there was more than one set:

These twins don’t share a birthday – or even a birth year. At least two sets of twins were born in different years Tuesday night as 2013 became 2014. In Washington, D.C., fraternal twin…

My grand daughter was playing with the keyboard while I was viewing the Mr.Market site. She pushed one of the keys and has shrunk the font so small I can hardly read it. The problem is only at this site. Anybody out there have a solution?

On my browser (Firefox) cntl-plus makes things bigger. Imagine something similar works on other browsers. Look for a browser help. Odd it's just Ernie's site.

The latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and most browsers allow users to easily increase the font size for better legibility.

                  CTRL + or -

Hold down the Ctrl key (Command key on a Macintosh) and press the + (plus) key. You can also decrease the font size by holding down the Ctrl key and pressing on the - (minus) key.

Louetta and Mimo, Thanks, you guys are lifesavers. Nice and big easy to read now. One more question. A few months ago it seemed all the colors changed at this site to light blues and grays. Is it just me or were changes made. Here are 2 hot stock tips as a reward for helping: CCRN, ODFL.

                      billy,

MrMarket uses vBulletin for this website. I am fairly certain that the colors you are concerned about are the choices of the administrator. If Karel reads this, perhaps he can chime in!

You can change the color of your posts however using the color BB code

                          Seahawks vs. Broncos: The Superbowl.

The teams are housed in the only two states in the U.S. to have passed laws legalizing the recreational use of marijuana.

When it comes to controlled substances, I am a virgin, believe it or not. Except when I was at UCLA during the Vietnam draft, when you didn't have to smoke anything; just breathe the air.

River, You're just naturally high, not a bad thing. The more the $$ gets flowing, the more states will change their ways just like they did with lottery, casinos.........it will no longer be a sin. By the way after watching the games I see no way Seattle can beat Denver. 17 hours later I'm still having sympathetic knee pains from watching Bowman's injury.

I read a fascinating article a couple of weeks ago about No banks lending to marijuana growers or even allowing bank accounts. Hard to sustain a business without a bank account IMO! Which is the open question in my mind about the marijuana stocks P7 has been mentioning. Interested in any and all comments here!
