Ski, I think most dairy herds today are pretty docile and are actually bred not only for great milk production but mild disposition as well.... Holstein Bulls can be dangerous and hard to handle due to their sheer size but most dairy operators AI (breed) their cows nowadays anyway.

I know of a pretty nice dairy operation in eastern VA that milks 1,200 cows using a turnstile automated parlor. The cows walk onto the turnstile and after one revolution she is milked, she walks off and another cow walks on. About 40 cows load the Turnstile and they are continuously walking on and off.... The operation milks each cow twice daily and operates three shifts with only one milker and one herdsman per shift. Each cow has a RF device attached to a collar that identifies the cow and the "system" keeps a tally on her milk production, when she is ready to be bred, if she's on medication and her milk can't be used, etc.... It's very impressive. Here's the company that builds the turnstile parlor. http://www.delaval.com/Products/Parlour_milking_systems/Rotaries/Turnstyles_HBR/default.htm

Well Lou...the nice thing about this forum is that you don't always have to "Stock Talk"...So how's the new place workin' out?

Fine. Its very much like the places I lived in the last four years, 150 year old building, one row of buildings from the river, fireplace, good size rooms.

That's cool, Louetta. I LOVE historic, old buildings! A couple years ago I stayed in a B&B called "Hewick" in eastern Virginia that must be one of the oldest in the country. It was originially a home built over a hundred years prior to the American Revolution. One of the cool things (to me) about it is that its history may also be bound up with some of my early immigrant ancestors. If you ever get down to that neck of the woods, you should check it out.
