For newbies: My MoMo (Momentum) list consists of stocks in the Top 5% of my Relative Strength (RS) Database of 5500 equities that closed up at least 2% on at least 1.5x Average Daily Volume.

My RS numbers may not be exact when compared to other's because we may have a different number of stocks in our databases, the treatment of IPO's and the fact that my database goes from 1-100...But most are very close as the RS formula is basic...Best, Doug(IIC)

                              • Doug, I know you’re a day trader and so this will not apply to you. Your ribbon chart is actually called the Guppy moving averages. The Exponential moving averages are divided into short term (BLUE) and long term (ORANGE). It is best used for trend traders. Here are the principles of the Guppy.

The tightening of the longer term Ma’s indicates indecisiveness on behalf of your longer-term traders. Longer-term trend traders may buy at point 1 (see chart). They (longer term) traders will be watching for the orange Ma’s to spread out. This indicates a strong trend. For price to show a strong change in character the blue ma’s will need to come back down under the orange. Normally for this to happen you will see a tightening of the orange Ma’s. This means the trend is getting weak and short-term traders are in control.

Here is the Nasdaq 100 Guppy chart: Here is the read from it. Chart is set on daily. We see a change in character back in Late Oct 05. Notice the bust through the orange Ma’s. Both longer and short term traders were both in agreement. See how the trend gained some strength as the longer term Ma’s begin the spread out. Feb 06 showed a change in Character as the Nas100 began to constrict. The longer-term traders really did not commit and bailed, as they believed the trend was getting weak. Short-term traders from Feb-April controlled Nas 100. Then notice the severe change in character in May. Now the longer-term traders took back control and notice the spread of the longer term Ma’s. The longer-term trend is strong and pointing down.
