US STOCKS RALLY, FUELED BY DROP IN CRUDE PRICE
Stocks advance, helped by another drop in oil prices that sent crude below $65 a barrel. The good news on the oil front, as well as a solid profit report from Goldman Sachs, outweighs concerns a wider-than-forecast trade deficit and reports of foiled attack by Islamic militants on the U.S. Embassy in Damascus. DJIA adds 107 points and Nasdaq edges higher.
HEWLETT-PACKARD CHAIRMAN TO STEP DOWN
Patricia Dunn, who came under fire for the tactics used to investigate boardroom leaks, will step down as chairman Jan. 18. H-P says CEO Hurd, will succeed Dunn, who will remain on board. Keyworth, whose leaks started the investigation, steps down from board. Shares gain 2%. See full coverage.
APPLE UNVEILS NEW IPODS, DISNEY DOWNLOADS
Company announces a revamped lineup of iPod devices, introduces a new version of iTunes that includes movies and videogames, and shows off a product that links the computer to the TV. Apple shares edge lower.
BRISTOL-MYERS CEO DOLAN TO LEAVE COMPANY
He and drug maker's general counsel will leave the firm after a federal monitor urges their dismissal. Board member James Cornelius is named interim CEO. Bristol intends to keep dividend flat in 2007. Shares gain 3%.
GOLDMAN SACHS 3Q NET FALLS 1.4%
Brokerage reports net income of $1.59 billion, or $3.26 a share. Earnings excluding items of $3.45 trump analysts' mean estimate of $2.97. Revenue rises 2% to $7.46 billion. Results may hint at an industry slowdown from recent record times. Shares gain 4%.
GM SHARES HIT 52-WEEK HIGH
Car maker's stock climbs 4% amid falling oil prices and hopes the company's turnaround strategy is working. Shares in rival Ford gain 3%, hitting their highest level since October.

California Sen. Feinstein says Justice Department is investigating the oil firm on charges of manipulating the crude market in the wake of BP decisions regarding Prudhoe Bay output. Senators take their turn lashing at the company for pipeline problems.
US TRADE GAP HITS RECORD IN JULY
U.S. trade balance widens to $68.04 billion from $64.82 billion in June as the price of foreign oil climbs to a record and exports slip for the first time in five months. Economists expected a deficit of $65.5 billion.
EIA, IEA LOWER OIL-DEMAND VIEWS
Energy Information Administration trims 2006 forecast for world oil demand by 100,000 barrels a day to 85 million barrels, 1.4% above 2005 use. International Energy Agency also cuts demand forecast, but appears likely to revise back up.
MAN CONSIDERING BID FOR SCANIA
