I always wondered why the prices can be so high before trading even starts. Why don't stocks just open at what they closed the night before (whether it's the after hours price or not)

I'm sure you know, thus I come to you IIC

It's basically just a supply and demand thing...usually based on after hours news or announcements. Everybody wanyts in or out based on that news. IMO, the stock market is a big game run by a bunch of crooks. Our goal is to try and figure out what they are doing and take advantage of it.

When I get these gap ups in the morning I hardly get the whole action...If a stock gaps up 10% at the open and closes up 15% for the day...I feel lucky to get 2-3% of it.

I've had pretty good luck waiting til about 10:15AM to buy a stock which is gapping up at the open. Waiting til then clears out any market buy orders which were placed which drive the stock up and gives some sellers a chance to come in to take advantage of the sudden up turn.

A lot of people do that...and it is probably wise...I could've made about 20 cents a share more on VRTY yesterday by waiting a while...and a couple of cents more on ITIG. If it keeps going...you just miss out...no big deal...there's always more tomorrow. Maybe I'm too impatient? THX...IIC

              Saddam

Will have to watch the foreign markets tonight to see the reaction to the Saddam news. I sure screwed up by raising so much cash on Friday I guess.

Maybe Oil stocks will jump tomorrow???...Anyone have any thoughts on what groups/sectors will react the best to this news?

Why would oil stocks go up? I would think that Saddam's capture implies a more stable Iraq and a more stable supply of oil which would take the price of oil down?

I think the open will be a little higher, we will see 20 - 30 point gains in the dow but I expect it to wear off quick as the day moves along. Im not sure the move will effect the price in oil or oil stocks. I think mabye deffense stocks and funds wil jump a bit; but like all, it wear off in a matter of hours.

                      Hmm!!!

I'm not really sure myself...but if you consider the technicals...if the mkt blows through 1970 it could go to 2015 IMO...I'm looking at the Hong Kong now...but I have a 1 hr delay so nothing yet...might be a good indicator though???

                              Japan

Tokyo shares rise on news of Saddam's capture
                              By Mariko Sanchanta in Tokyo

Tokyo shares were broadly higher in morning trade on Monday, following the capture of Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi leader.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 average gained 2.7 per cent to 10,441.83, while the broader Topix index was up 1.9 per cent to 1,017.62.

The capture of Mr Hussein fuelled optimism among Japanese investors that US benchmarks would rally when the market opens on Monday.

Blue chips and exporters were broadly higher, with Sony up 2 per cent to Y3,650 and Canon up 2.1 per cent to Y4,960. Toshiba gained 2.8 per cent to Y403, while Fujitsu was 2.2 per cent higher at Y611.

Elsewhere, shares of Ashikaga Financial, the regional bank that was nationalised earlier this month, jumped 23 per cent to Y16 following local media reports that WL Ross & Co, the US investment fund, was considering taking over the failed bank.

Banks rallied on expectations that Mr Hussein’s capture would provide a boost to the market over the next few days. Shares of Mizuho, Japan’s largest bank, were up 6.1 per cent to Y295,000, while MTFG was 3 per cent higher at Y793,000. SMFG gained 6.5 per cent to Y528,000 while UFJ was up 6.9 per cent to Y481,000.

Investors are looking ahead to the outcome of the Bank of Japan’s two-day policy meeting, which concludes on Tuesday. The BoJ is likely to keep its monetary policy unchanged.
