Are Stock Picking and Research Services Worth the Price?

Earlier this year I had a free trial with Zacks and eventually bought a 1 year research access subscription for $199. Also after trying various trials of Vectorvest products, I signed on for a month to month subscription for $59/month. A person couldn't buy all the stocks listed as "buy" or "strong buy" by Zacks and VV as there are probably more than 500 on any day. I check out each newly rated stock's chart, its earnings record, strength of industry group, relative timing amongst other fundamentals. After eliminating 99% of the stocks there's always 1 or 2 that pass all the tests so it often gets bought.

Checking back to April of this year I classified my buys and sells as found through Zacks, Vectorvest, or a combination of both. Here are my current results.

    Zacks realized gains--PPC 600 shares bot 4/4 4/7 sold +46.33% $2507
    ---------------------AMBA 400 shares bot 4/4 4/11 sold +15.49% $850

    Zacks realized losses-800 shares HT bot 7/25 7/29 sold -------5.50% -$273

    Vectorvest unrealized gain (holding) 2000 shares LBMH bot 9/10 9/27 +4.35% $180
Zacks unrealized gain (holding) 200 shares KKR bot 4/7 +25.39% +$991
Zacks unrealized loss (holding) 100 shares PAG bot 9/25 -7.97% -$342..

Both Zacks and Vectorvest agreed ratings
    BLOX bot 150 shares 7/16 still holding +48% +$2179
    III bot 1675 shares 9/11 9/19 9/30 still holding +15.54% +$1041
    QIHU bot 100 shares 9/20 still holding -3.67% -$323

Totals Realized gains $3357 realized losses -$273

Unrealized gains $4302 unrealized losses -$665

Total realized and unrealized gains $7748
Total realized and unrealized losses -$937
Amount paid to VV and Zacks in 2013--$789.....................so far so good. I've made many other buys I didn't record what source but I've not had a really big loss this year. Also holding many big dividend payers probably for the long haul.

It's free and Huge! Even though you don't recommend stocks to buy, some of the ones you mention seem to do quite well in the marketplace.

Well put billy! Plus, I also enjoy donating to good causes that Mr. Market brings to my attention. (something the paid services never do)

I do subscribe to gorillatrades and as long as I stay away from Options suggestions the subscription has more than paid for itself.
