A great pick for market doldrums - coffee

Not many people in China drink coffee. Eventually, the percentage of people in China who drink coffee will equal that of the percentage of Americans drinking it. People are people. We like coffee, they will like coffee.

Can you imagine what that will do to global demand for coffee...and more importantly, to the price of this commodity?

    Go long!

That's great forward thinking Ernie. The Chinese worship Americans and want to be just like us. I was treated like a god while I was there. If they see us drink coffee they will want it.

I'll bet we could get a jumpstart on the coffee business in China, if you would be willing to pose for a few billboards. Chinese Chicks would go crazy. You could be as huge in China as you are in the investment world!

Do you think the CEO of Starbucks reads this website?

HONG KONG - Starbucks Corp. expects tea powerhouse China to eventually become the coffee chain's second-biggest market after the United States, an executive said Friday.

The company has 9,373 stores worldwide and hopes to expand to 30,000, said Martin Coles, president of the Seattle-based coffee chain's international operations. Coles didn't give a timeline for the expansion.

Coles said that Starbucks expects China to become its No. 2 market after the U.S. in the "long-term." The chain has 120 stores in China now.

"We believe that China has enormous growth potential," he said. "We see it as a major source of future growth for the company."

Starbucks was supposed to make an announcement about its China business on Friday. But at the last-minute, the company decided to delay the news for undisclosed reasons.

The chain's China stores are in Beijing, Shanghai, the northeastern city of Qingdao and the southern province of Guangdong

The company plans to open stores in the northeastern city of Dalian and the southwestern city of Chengdu within the next six months.

Coles said the response so far has been great, especially from expatriates.

"Some of them have told us that they have been waiting for the store for four years," Coles said.

He added, however, that his company isn't looking for success overnight.

"China is a longer-term play for us," Coles said. "Certainly, we are not looking for it to become the crown jewel in the next year or two. It is an investment."

Let's see, CEO reads the article on the May 5th, negotiates a business agreement with the Chinese on the 6th and they agree to open Starbucks by year end--don't think so. But, good try...

nevertheless, going long SBUX at $50 on May 3 (when $$MM suggested going long coffee) would have net you about 10% so far. What's that annualized?

            $$MM is HUGE!

I became good friends with a family of Chinese immigrants who have only been here a couple of years. They took over a Chinese takeout place right by my house an it was convienent to go there. The food is great and we became good friends. They work like dogs 14 hours a day and are the nicest most gracious people you could want as friends. They want me to go to China with them this year to meet all their relatives and to see what we can bring back here to sell. Apparently they have relatives in everything over there and I have money and know the ropes here. They want to start an import business here with me and have all the connections in place over there. So sometime after this summer we're going to China for a month to see what's worthwhile bringing back to market here.

I happen to know quite a few Chinese people...some are very good friends of mine...They all drink coffee, although they seem to drink more tea...I don't frequent Starbucks myself...I sorta have an aversion to paying 5 bux for a Caffe Latte that I can have at home for about a schilling...But if SBUX is smart they will not only serve coffee but also have many varieties of tea on the menu...Doug(IIC)

BTW Ernie...Where's that girl I liked on your master trader ads?...I refuse to click them until they re-hire her

You haven't spent much time in a Starbucks, have you? They offer eight different tazo teas.
