Hey NBB.... I've never used my .45 as a tool to win an argument with anyone, that's not my style.

Doug, NBB did not say that your wife is not a "person". I'd say he highly respects women and probibly has a great marrage.... NBB simply asked Jim.... If he were the "man of the house"?....

IIC... Why would you lie to your wife and tell her "she's right even when she's wrong".... Is that how you've built a strong and trusting marrage?.... My wife would know better than to ask me to go to such a movie anyway because she's well aware of.... and respects my moral guidlines. Not to mention the context of such a movie makes her just as sick to her stomach as it makes me. Jim and his wife went to the movie because they BOTH are entertained by this discusting homosexual trash.... It takes two to tango.

I learned to let people save face when I got an A+ in Dale Carnegie's "How to win friends and influence People"...Actually, that was the book...The class was something like D.C.'s Effective Communications & Human Relations
...But no matter...Here is what I learned:

Six Ways To Make People Like You

        1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
        2. Smile.
        3. Remember that a man's name is to him the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
        4. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about theirselves.
        5. Talk in terms of the other man's interests.
        6. Make the other person feel important-and do it sincerely.

Twelve Ways To Win People To Your Way Of Thinking

        1. The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it.
        2. Show respect for the other man's opinions.
        3. If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically.
        4. Begin in a friendly way.
        5. Get the other person saying, "yes, yes" immediately.
        6. Let the other man do a great deal of the talking.
        7. Let the other man feel that the idea is his.
        8. Try to honestly see things from the other person's point of view.
        9. Be sympathetic with the other person's ideas and desires.
        10. Appeal to the nobler motives.
        11. Dramatize your ideas.
        12. Throw down a challenge.

Nine Ways To Change People Without Giving Offense Or Arousing Resentment

        1. Begin with praise and honest appreciation.
        2. Call attention to people's mistakes indirectly.
        3. Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.
        4. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.
        5. Let the other man save his face.
        6. Praise the slightest improvement and praise every involvement. Be "hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise."
        7. Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.
        8. Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct.
        9. Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.

I have salesmen call on me all the time trying to sell me machinery, materials, tools and supplies etc.... I can spot the ones that have been to these BS courses a mile away. Especially when they use my name five times in a sentence (trying to make me feel important) and give me these big crap eatin grins.... I just hustle em on out the door and make em think there's actually a snowball's chance in hell that I'll ever buy their wares.

You CAN'T instruct a man to be sincere.... He's either truley sincere or he's just full of crap.... I tell my sales people to be themselves.... but then again.... I actually hire them and I observe them, so I know if they've "got it"... or not pretty quickly.

I'd hire all 3 of you guys. It would make an entertaining and interesting work environment.

I think it would be fun myself, but it wouldn't last long. You've been shovelling snow for over a year, but Lye would show up to work with his GEHL skidloader, and the shovelling would be over in an hour. Then Doug and I would be looking for another job because there would be no work.

BTW, BillyJoe, I hope to post a link on the Canadian tax refund tomorrow.

You would have made a good general. I still think you'd carry a pair of .45s on the job Gen'l Patton did. (I know, I know; he didn't drive a GEHL).

I know the type of sales people you are talking about Lye...I have those guys for breakfast too...But I can think of no one who would not benefit from taking the main Dale Carnegie course.

I worked for very large Banks for over 16 years...It was required that I take jillions of courses especially in the late 70's to mid 80's...Many I did not want to take...But there was no choice back then if you wanted to be left standing with all the staff cuts. They paid for everything anyway. Admittedly. some courses were not that great...but some were. Overall, I'd rate the DC course as the most beneficial one I ever took...Doug

Jim...Betcha never thought your question would lead to all this???

But on a serious note...Just because you joined doesn't mean that you need to interact with everybody if you don't want to. In fact you'll probably not even want to look at every thread...Maybe you will just want to concentrate on a couple of threads???

With over 1500 members I would say it is pretty much impossible to follow everyone. And actually, there's probably less than 50 that post with any regularity...But following 50 would be a monumental task too.

If you only find one good idea a week in this forum I'd say your time would be well spent at least reading the serious posts...Best, Doug(IIC)
