good question - as your signature says "When money flows in, the market goes up. ..."

The size of the global stock and bond markets was approximately $212 Trillion, $157 T in bonds and $54 T in stocks in 2010.

At $542 AAPL has a market cap of $511 billion.

You would need to put $50 billion into 100 companies the size of AAPL just to invest $5 trillion, or $5 billion into 1000 companies, etc., and then attack the bond market for a 50/50 allocation plus some cash

But bonds don't seem like a good investment right now. Assuming that at least 1/2 of those 1000 companies would be divi-paying stocks of over 7%, the AAPL-equivalents would be growth stocks paying less than 7%, what about small-cap stocks growth but no divis or <7% divis? All those trillions are going to my head! We need to think this out! You're doing a great job with a start! Let's hear from others. P.S. what about REITs or closed-end divi funds or ETFs?

We need to make some historical assumptions. Returns from the stock portion would include both capital gains and dividends.

Can we buy and hold stocks for 20 years and reach a goal of 6.67% annually with a stock that pays no dividends? I have a very simple rule: If a stock drops and closes below its 100 day moving average for 3 consecutive days, I get rid of it. This will eliminate large losses, but also you may sell off a winner.

On the bond side, we buy and hold until maturity, thus preserving the capital.

Certainly open and closed end funds are potential purchase candidates, along with REIT's, precious metals, option writing programs, and lots of others.

This is why we need a team of smart minds to chime in on this. Otherwise maybe this is not possible, we throw in the towel, and just keep spending our way to prosperity.

Mimo, I just checked 5 high dividend payers (4-12%) I've held and reinvested divs. for years. All are below the 50,100, and 200 dma in the last 30 days. I say we take the 12 trillion, find the best high div. payers now unrealistically undervalued due to recent election and Hurricane events, and buy, buy, buy. If we're not averaging 6.67% annually by 2032, the whole country will be down the toilet anyway. With interest rates and inflation sure to be higher by then, we'll have surpassed the debt with $$ to spare. Of course we will make periodic adjustments dumping those rocked by sex scandals and accounting irregularities.

Great idea. There is a big problem investing all of the money. Can we find enough good quality securities and make prudent decisions? There are plenty of details to work out.

Mimo, We'll not be able to find enough div. stocks so we'll have to throw in a few billion to Berkshire Hathaway, mutual funds, maybe some municipal bonds (tax exempt) a few tons of copper, silver, gold, platinum as well as billions of bushels of soybeans, corn, wheat, and sugar.

I remember hearing Warren Buffet saying it was easy to double a million dollars but difficult when you're talking billions. It seems as if he hit a road block at about 50 billion. He's been in that range for several years.

This is the challenge - we need to be creative - if it were easy, anyone could do it.
