JFK was on the job training. He was responsible for the market crash of 1962 when he forced the steel industry to roll back price increases. The Dow fell 25%. I was there. It has been an interesting discussion. I always enjoy an intellectual debate.

I was only 9 at the time and I really don't remember it...But my Dad was a stockbroker and he told me about that years later...The way he tells it though is even worse than what I later read about it. He also told me about the day Eisenhower had a heart attack.

From my personal recollection the worst times were the mid 70's...because I was actualy investing some. But I did not really start investing regularly until 1983....Doug(IIC)

Lets take a step into the future and look at what is happening TODAY...As far as I am concerned it is the NEW WORLD...NOT A NEW AMERICA...So take OBRADOR...A whining loser...The world does not need people like him...The only people that want him in power are the the one's that want everything handed to them on a silver platter w/o doing anything to get it...The guy is a mirror image of FDR IMO.

FDR gave hope to a nation in crisis with unemployment having reached as high as 25%. The Dow dropped from over 300 to around 32 during the Great Depression. FDR's efforts at a New Deal for all Americans provided jobs though some of his experiments failed. He wasn't afraid to fail and that is what made him a great president. I remember kids going to school with only a potato to eat for lunch. Cardboard was inserted in worn our shoes and mothers heated up bricks to place in children's beds in cold weather to keep them warm. Today's youth have never experienced such hardships and frankly I doubt if they could handle such adversity over an extended period of time. Social Security was introduced as a safety net. It wasn't meant to be used to buy material items such as TVs and automobiles. There should be a means test for SS recipients. We can no longer afford it especially with the baby boomers retiring. It took a World War to bring us out of the Great Depression. In effect we mowed lawns while Germany and Japan were building up their war machine. That said, the American people loved FDR more than you can possibly comprehend which was evidenced in his being elected
4 terms. He guided us through a war which cost 250,000 American lives.
He saved the world from a madman.

"In Franklin Roosevelt there died the greatest American friend we have ever known, and the greatest champion of freedom who has ever brought help and comfort from the new world to the old." Winston Churchill

To compare FDR who was paralyzed from the waist down from polio, to OBRADOR is an insult. You should be ashamed of yourself for posting such
          nonsense.

Well..we are all entitled to our own opinion...But my relatives who lived through the FDR years...Only ones left are my Mom and Dad...Tell a different story.

I'm not gonna say I agree with everything on this site...But it is enlightening IMO

I really doubt that you have any clue to how much welfare fraud goes on in this country...FDR was instrumental in allowing people to get something for nothing...And Kennedy was pretty good at that too IMO...Doug

Your Mom and Dad tell a different story? I guess they were not affected by the Great Depression. The only one's who hated FDR were rich Republicans and isolationists. The website you posted for me to read is typical of right wing propaganda. There was no welfare in the Great Depression. People lined up in soup lines and their dignity was totally destroyed. Welfare has a purpose, but imo only in extreme circimstances which should be monitored closely. Able bodied citizens must work. That is the bottom line. They should be made to take jobs the Mexicans are now doing or be cut off from welfare entirely. My father had a chain of stores which he lost in the Depression except for the flagship store. He served in France in World 1, my brother in the South Pacific in World War II. My contribution was overseas in the Korean War. We were all volunteers. We have always felt that the most fortunate Americans should do what is required to help those who are not able to help themselves. Today we have a culture in our society which is based purely on greed and selfishness. We have become a decadent nation in many respects. We will pay for this attitude in time. What goes around - comes around. The people in the Roaring Twenties never thought in a million years that an economic upheaval could reduce them to poverty.

              Good luck with your trading.

See...if we both try we can have a civil conversation...I agree, society has an obligation to help those who cannot help themselves...but my guess is that over 80% of the people on welfare CAN help themselves if they had to.

I don't agree with your statement about Mexicans...doesn't sound very Liberal to me.

But you are right on...My dad did grow up as a rich republican...The only job my Grandmother ever had was Civil Defense Block Captain in San Marino, CA during WW II. I don't know if my dad hated FDR...but he didn't like him. Guess I could ask.

My Grandfather was a stock broker and he did well through the depression...My Dad was too but he didn't start till the early 50's.

My Great Uncle who was the REAL Rich one in the family co-founded a brokerage during the depression (1932) that still exists: http://crowellweedon.com/ Click ABOUT US...He is the one on the right.
My Great Uncle used to say (although I doubt he was the original one to say it) "If you took all the money and split it up evenly among everybody...Within 5 years 95% of the original rich people before the split would be the same ones who ended up rich after the 5 years".

                  Best, Doug(IIC)

I'm sure we could dig up some dirt on every President who ever served...It's a thankless job...You won't find me on the ballot any time soon...Of course, if you want...You can always write me in...I could use the publicity...My slogan is "A winning stock in every portfolio"...IIC
