Well, Wikipedia defines tool to include cognitive methodologies so I guess I can answer. I look for indications that the market is not responding in the proper fashion to conditions which should cause it to respond, e.g. if oil prices go down the general market should go up. If it doesn't, that's bearish. Or, if oil prices go up the market should go down. If it instead it goes up that's bullish. There are other indicators than oil prices of course. Also if the market heads upward (downward) in response to a bullish (bearish) scenario but doesn't folow thru. E.g. last Wednesday the market took off like a house afire the day after the Fed announcement but tailed off and actually (mostly) finished down. If it had gathered strength later in the day I would have bought. I also record daily commentary by Bob Pisani and Art Cashin who often talk about what floor traders have in mind. I believe them when they say we're overbought/oversold though I don't know exactly how they determine that. Lastly I guess I read the Stock Trader's Almanac and use their trends as reinforcement if appropriate. That's the kind of stuff I do. I believe if there were an analytical tool which worked well we'd all know it and use it.

Good point on oil...Ya know gold used to be my main indicator...gold up market down and vice versa...But times changed. However, I feel oil is much more important than gold....And I guess food would be the most defensive.
Pisani and Cashin...Know of them...But I don't follow them. As far as O/B, I guess they could be using any technical indicator(s)...Generally, I think many use the 10-12 day A/D issues and volume...But there are a myriad of indicators...When the majority of them all indicate the same thing I guess the odds are in our favor one way or the other.
Thx...Best, Doug(IIC)

Doug, I place most of my analyses on price action. I also look at A/D lines and trin. Trin is used for short term I’ll mainly use tops down approach. Market, sector stock. I use to use every indicator under the sun and had them heading in different directions. I feel this confused the tar out of me. As for market action I’ve been using S&P500 instead of the Nasdaq comp. Of all the indicators I’ve used I’d say RSI and STO are not bad. I would recommend turning off all those high-speed indicators and simply look at a bar chart and see if it talks to ya. You might be surprised how you might pick out bases, support and resistance.
Here is my current market take:
Market=range bound, bull over 1280 if stick.
Sector action=Lack of leadership and commitment
Stocks=not many setting up
Action=standby
This means Monday is a sit on my hands day.

Off Topic
Since this is Sunday I guess it is OK for me to ask an Off Topic Question.
Louetta, (since you are in college) or anyone else...In my quest to have 100 websites by the end of the year I am putting together a site directed at college students.
This will be another semi auto-pilot site that I will probably only update 2-3x a month. I am looking for opinions on what college students would most be interested in...I have a lot of ideas but since I graduated 21 years ago I'm sure I am a bit out of touch.
Any ideas???...TIA....Doug(IIC)"Trade What Is Happening...Not What You Think Is Gonna Happen"

But seriously...that's not a bad idea although I don't have time to do it...But your post actually sparked another idea which I'll keep to myself unless I do it...thx...Doug(IIC)

So if you want one website maybe you're looking at a heirarchy. At the top you choose social or sports or fashion. Then at the second level for social you specify your school or choose special events. Etc.
I DO see potential for advertising revenue here. College students have a reasonable amount of cash and low overhead so almost all their money is disposable. Ads for local bars, hotels in Cancun, trendy store locators for girls, etc should be posssible.

Students tend to blow their money on the silliest things, don't they?
Later, when overhead is not so low (when they need to provide for their own food and shelter) they will realize that saving that disposable money would have been the best way to go...

So there is some division by gender there. But there's also a lot of division on the social stuff depending on where you are. My friends at Cornell (boys) were always hungering to meet girls. But they wanted to meet them in Ithaca so info on trendy bars in Boston would not interest them (nor did it seem to interest most of the boys at Harvard). But some social topics would interest a wide variety of people, Spring Break stuff, Cancun, etc. On the sports front boys are interested in both their own school sports but also pro stuff. On the college front boys at a given school probably only are interested in their own school teams except for special events like final four. On the pro side all boys in New England, except possibly for Connecticut, would be interested in the Boston/New England teams so its not school by school.

Thanks for the thoughts...I've got it set up 2 ways.
1) Stuff that could apply to college students regardless of location. Advertise nationwide. But that means local stuff is out unless I have about 200+ pages.
2) Start with a more localized site like my area which is So. Cal...I live in West L.A. That means I could still have the national stuff but I could also localize it for students at UCLA which is near my house, USC and 2 JC's in the area...West LA College and Santa Monica College...I figure that way I could get local events and maybe some local advertisers. If it worked I could slowly start moving in different directions geographically.
I need to decide pretty soon as many schools will be starting soon. At one time I was involved in advertising to reach college students...so I've got some pretty good ideas on how to do that.
You mention differences between students at different schools...Good point...That made me think of the overall difference at a school like UCLA and Cal. St. U. L.A....Both have about 30,000 students...but they are worlds apart as many at CSULA are older and p/t.
I hadn't thought about fashion...Good idea...I'll have to bone up on that one....I've been on the lam from the Fashion Police for about 30 years...I also like your sports idea...surprised I didn't think of that as I went to college on a sports scholarship...thx...It sparked a cool idea as I read your post.
Some of my ideas are:
Credit Cards/Scholarships/Loans
Music
Travel...which you mentioned
Dating
Apartment Rentals
Auto Insurance
Computers
Part/Full Time Jobs
One that I really like is Free Restaurant Coupons...No Registration...Just Print and Save...I have access to a lot of them locally and nationally...Do you think college students would like coupons like "Buy One get One FREE" or something like that at fast food and nicer restaurants?
Anyway...I appreciate you taking the time to respond...I can get visitors to any site...The key though is to keep them coming back w/o having to update everyday...that's the tough part.
BTW...Not that it is any of my biz...But are you originally from MA? My mother graduated from Wooster (Or is it Worcester) HS and my Dad went to Babson when you were probably just a twinkle in your Grandfather's eye...Best, Doug(IIC)"Trade What Is Happening...Not What You Think Is Gonna Happen"

Doug, you want to keep 'em coming back to your college Web site? Set up a message board designed specifically for students to brag about how great their sports teams are and to "rag" on their rivals. Banner ads would feature happy hour at the local watering holes, and of course, pizza.
As far as other content, the generalized stuff, the nation-wide stuff you could put on, for example, www(dot)icecollege(dot)com, including links to all the localized sites, with such url's as: ucla(dot)icecollege(dot)com, usc(dot)icecollege(dot)com, umb(dot)icecollege(dot)com (for UMass Boston), etc.—Rob
