IIC's Bottom 10 College Football Poll

    IIC's Bottom 10 College Football Teams 2006

This thread was inspired by Louetta who suggested I consider College Sports in my upcoming College oriented site...Great idea Louetta...Thanks...Now, Anyone can come up with their TOP 10...But what about the BOTTOM 10???...Sure, there are a few...In fact for you 40-80 yr. olds you might remember Steve Harvey's syndicated Bottom 10 about 25 yrs ago...I actually have met him numerous times as we had some common friends back then...He and I did not get along very well as... Ski would say: "We both had BITING personalities"...But he is a witty guy and he writes some syndicated columns for newspapers and probably makes a lot more than I do...Even though he makes some of that crap up from what I understand.

So here it is...The “Creme de la Crap” for this year's college football season...Why some of these schools even field a team is beyond me!!!...

    1. BUFFALO BULLS…When you think of crummy teams, you just can’t help thinking of the Bulls. Only 10-69 since joining Division 1-A in 1999, it appears that they will be lucky to even win a game this year. New coach Turner Gil, the ex-Nebraska star would be well advised to take to the field himself if the Bulls are to win a game.

Actually, the season may be over for the Bulls if they lose their first game to #2 Temple although Vegas oddsmakers are putting the Over/Under on that game at 1. Then comes Auburn on September 23rd where the Over/Under is 100.

    2. TEMPLE OWLS…Arguably the worst college team over the past two decades, coming off a perfect 0-11 record last year and a new coach makes the Owls one of the worst bets in the country. Giving up over 45 points per game in 2005…The only saving grace is that they only have 3 returning starters on defense.

Here’s a quote from the Golden Boy…New coach Bobby Golden: "I'm excited about leading this program as we transition into the Mid-American Conference. I'm confident in the commitment to excellence that currently exists at Temple University. We have the best university, the best city and the best facilities in the MAC. The future looks bright on North Broad Street." Too bad they have the worst football team or do they?...We’ll find out on August 31st when they play Buffalo.

    3. KENT STATE GOLDEN FLASHES…The only thing good about this outfit is their nickname…Averaging a paltry 45yds rushing per game last year I don’t see Kent St. scoring a whole lot of points this year…One thing’s for sure though…The Mid America Conference sux.

    4. NEW MEXICO STATE AGGIES…Well, 0-12 last year in his debut season…I’d pretty much say Head Coach Hal Mumme’s job is on the line if he can’t scramble at least a few wins this season. Geez, the Aggies allowed 45 QB sacks last year…What’s the record???

    5. SYRACUSE ORANGE…When did these guys change their name from Orangemen to simply Orange? What kind a name is that?...One thing’s for sure…You won’t find these jokers in the Orange Bowl. Wait…where does conference foe U. of So. Florida play their home games???...Might be tough to beat last year’s 1-10 record.

See Next Post for 6-10 and Honorable Mentions

The Worst of the Worst Continued

    6. UNLV RUNNIN’ REBELS…Coming off a miserable 2-9 season losing their last 5 games the only thing the Rebels will be RUNNIN’ after is their opponent’s wide receivers as they sprint towards the goal line.

    7. FLORIDA ATLANTIC OWLS…Heck, I didn’t even know Fla. Atl. had a team…Fortunately for the Owls they are in a weak conference…Unfortunately for the Owls they are also a “Schedule Filler” team for the likes of Clemson, Kansas St., Oklahoma St. and So. Carolina…It’s a pretty safe bet that the Owls will enter the Conference season at 0-4.

    8. RICE OWLS…There’s something about Owls and football not mixing very well. QB’s Chase Clement and Joel Armstrong are both back this year…But that’s not very good news as both completed less than 43% of their passes last year. Clement averaged 0.5 yds per carry… 32 yds in 65 attempts…But the thing is one of those carries was for 25 yds when one of the cheerleaders tops fell off and distracted the opposing tacklers. Perhaps they should give Frosh QB John Shepard from El Dorado, AR a shot???…However, El Dorado’s only claim to fame is that there is a big toxic waste dump there…So there’s a good chance that Shepard’s arm might just fall off by mid-season.

    9. IDAHO VANDALS…It’s gonna take more than Dennis Erickson to turn this program around. They’ve only averaged 2.2 victories a season the last 5 years, so if they win 3 this year maybe the fans will consider the season a success? I’m hoping that the BIG GAME against New Mexico State will be on TV on October 7th.

    10. NORTH TEXAS MEAN GREEN…Gotta love their nickname…But that’s about it. Coming off a miserable 2-9 season, The MEAN GREEN travel to Austin to play Texas in their season opener on September 2nd…That should be a bloodbath with 58 Freshman on the roster.

Honorable Mention: DUKE BLUE DEVILS, MISSISSSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS, KENTUCKY WILDCATS, TULANE GREEN WAVE.

      Doug,
I'm going to monitor your picks to see if they're really the worst. This is probably one case where shorting all of them will work 95% of the time.

Yeah...I was thinking that you'd be a good one to do that...I'd like to make a weekly update...But I'm not going to...Let's see at the end of the season...Thx...Doug(IIC)

PS...They are only from Division 1-A(119 colleges)...I'm sure there are some smaller schools that are a lot worse

The Steelers' Mean Joe Greene went to North Texas St., now the Univ. of North Texas.

            Doug,
I was thinking of a way to evaluate your bottom 10. How about this.
One win and the team is in trouble. Two wins will put team on IIC probation . Three victories and it's adios from the bottom 10. Likewise , particularly bad performances equal bonus points. Loss by 25, +1 , 35= +2 , 45= +3 , 55= +5, 65 points or more = +10 . This should separate the horrific from the merely bad. I'm really looking forward to the season. Watch some team come from out of nowhere to stink up the joint. Anyone can make the top 10 , only the very worst sink to the depths of the IIC Bottom 10.

Yeah...they could probably use him this year too...Funny, Texas is Football Heaven...But some of their teams stink...Sorry about including your hometown UNLV...But it is what it is.

Let's make this another game. I'll be glad to keep the books if you guys want to do this. Make a portfolio of your 10 worst schools from #1 to #10. When would be a good date for a deadline? And we could keep the thread right where we are. Some affirmation please. I think the only rules would be that there are no rules. Division 1-A schools only. Worst record or records wins.

Doug is already in. I'm in. I'm sure Billyjoe would be in. Anyone else.

By the way Doug. That guy Golden is from the Jersey shore conference right here by where I live. I've seen him play and he was pretty good and a leader. I bet he pulls those owls up by their bootstraps.

Re UNLV football, your pick is probably wrong. Take the over on number of wins this season. Talented transfer QB on the field this year.

                      What's this???...6 QB's on the roster???...Most teams only have 3

I'm still looking for your DD on this one ...

                        Inside Dish column at Yahoo:

                        Sporting News writer Matt Hayes:

                        //
I've got a good feeling about UNLV this season. Coach Mike Sanford has a fantastic offensive mind, and he quickly is upgrading his team's talent with junior college players and Division I-A transfers. Adding jucos is a short-term solution to ending a long history of bad teams, but winning and recruiting good high school players go hand in hand. The more credibility and wins brought in by transfers--guys such as QB Rocky Hinds (USC), CBs Eric Wright (USC) and Mil'Von James (UCLA) and S Tony Cade (Oklahoma)--the more attractive the program becomes to high school stars (see: Kansas State under Bill Snyder). . . .

                        Rebel Net Senior Editor

As the Rebels continue practice throughout the week, the battle for a starting spot at the quarterback position is as hot as the Las Vegas weather, but one thing is for certain: whoever wins the position is going to have a very nice assembly of talent to get the ball to. That's for certain.

Getting the chance to see junior college transfer Aaron Straiten for the first time this week turned out to be quite a treat. Living up to major press clippings can be a bit tough, especially coming from the juco ranks, but after seeing Straiten, who is listed at 6-3, 205-pounds on the roster, once you can see the undeniable potential. Straiten will give Mountain West Conference defensive backs all kinds of trouble with his smooth stride and sure hands. The four wideout sets that coach Mike Sanford loves to run will get very dangerous with shifty sophomore Casey Flair and rapidly improving Justin Marvel out on routes with Straiten. ...

Anyway Park...It's not like I attended the training camps of these teams...I just looked for the worst teams I could find in a half hour.

Also, the thing about all these transfers is that it may take them some time to work as a team...By that time they'll all graduate...well, probably not graduate, but they'll have used up their eligibility...It might have worked in Basketball...but there's more players out there in FB
