    Week 8, Day 4

    Week 8 - Winter Games
Day 4 - Downhill Derby - Grab whatever you can and ride downhill to the finish line!

Spikefader captains a fine vessel of rapscallions into first place. Word on the street is that there are no more virgins in town after his crew celebrates.

Gatorman found the ONNN button with this contraption, and made his way into 2nd place:

And securing third place in unconventional style, our favorite admin comes cruising in on his PC:

Jiesen never got up from his fall. Maybe next week will be better.

    • Congrats to spike, Gator and Karel - nicely done.
You've earned a hot cocoa at the lodge!

Spike, You da' man! Week after week, making us all look like amateurs! I don't really mind looking like an amateur since I am one.

Didn't Rob short NVEC for the final second of trading?

Also, the fact that he's buying some HOV bodes well for us TOL and KBH holders...after all, people still need to buy houses, even when prices aren't going through the roof anymore, right?

              I wouldn't count on it

I didn't expect to win with it ... just thought there was a better chance of NVEC selling off in the last minute or two than there was for GOOG moving up in the same time frame. NVEC was up big today on no apparent news. So I thought there would be some last minute profit taking, but it didn't materialize.

                    First pick

I'm going to start off with BTJ long.

Oil has seen some recent gains and even when it was coming off of it's high, the service stocks did not trade in unison with the price of oil... it seems that oil companies will continue to drill and maintain and update at the same pace, even when oil is at $50... Now that it looks to be going higher, I think the oil service stocks might pick up some traction and shoot even higher.

I chose BTJ because it is meeting criteria of several screens of mine.

                            Long CHAP!

                            Congratulations, Spike and Gator!

Yesterweek I announced a possible change of strategy and now I am ready for it. I am no longer going to use a "mechanical investing" pick for the POTW, but a $$$Mr. Market$$$-like pick. Yes! To this end I am going to resuscitate (again) my Marketocracy fund. In this fund I invest in stocks that I find using my approximation of $$$Mr. Market$$$'s method, but I will keep them as long as they show some progress. One of these stocks will also be my POTW pick, for as long as it stays in the fund. This weeks pick is CHAP, so CHAP will be my first POTW pick following this strategy. And I will stick to it for at least 3 months.

The mechanical investing pick was meant as some kind of benchmark, but that project has run to seed. Jiesen, thanks for your efforts for what once was known as the K-factor! The picks (and the K-factor) didn't do too well in the months we kept it up.

                            Regards,

                            Karel

You're welcome, Karel! And congrats on your bronze for last week, and congrats to Spike and Gator for being #1 and #2.

Thanks, Peanuts, for keeping the POTW interesting, and for keeping up the cumulative results, so I don't have to!

For next week, put me in AMLN long. (damn, I sure took a beating with NFI! I shoulda just stuck to the plan...)
