We have an O Charley's in town, and I've eaten there I think twice. It does not impress me. There are easily 4 or 5 other steak houses in town that I'd rather go to .... and we don't even have a whole lot of restaurants here.

You may have already said, but what service do you use to scan for chart patterns Doug?

No...I didn't say. I just look at over 5,000 charts on Saturday so everyone else can go out and enjoy the weekend.

Actually, I'm using several methods including my own database, stockfetcher and stockcharts. I can also copy some other decent lists from some sites and flip thru the charts.

Two weeks ago I actually did look at about 2,000 charts...But during the week I narrowed down some criteria and I only looked at about 800 charts last weekend. On Wednesday night I flipped thru about 200 more(That's when I found SUNH).

Sounds like a lot of charts but it really isn't. I can zip thru 250 charts in less than 15 mins....I just write down the ones that resemble the pattern. Then when I'm all done I put those tickers into a Favorites Folder at Stockcharts to look at them more closely...I delete the ones that are not that good and leave in the Classics and the Pretty Good ones. It is pretty nice at Stockcharts because I can look at 30 little charts at a time...and I can click any I want to see a larger chart.

If just 4 or 5 people would help we could easily look at every chart in the NYSE, Naz and Amex...But that isn't necessary...The scans I run from my own database and a couple of sites I grab some lists from include some minimum fundies...But the other ones are pattern only.

After I post them on Sunday I go thru and separately place some I like in my streamer...That list can change daily or more often.

One nice thing is R/T stockcharts...I have them in a folder as I said above and can see which ones are moving right out of the gate and at any time during the day...very handy.

Okay, Doug. If I wanted to help you scan for cups, what would you want me to do?

Good question...I think I've got my database covered (5500+ tix)...But I can't give you access to that anyway. I've got stockfetcher covered now too.

I really don't have Stockcharts covered though.

I have not tried...But maybe I will try DailyGraphs this weekend...They have it set up so that you can put up some criteria in their custom screens and flip thru 400 charts in a flash if you have a fast connection. ...Anyone else might tell you their limit is 200...But where there's a will there's a way...Trust me...it is 400.

But I guess it depends upon what you have access to???

What you need is a way to set some criteria and have a list come up...then be able to click, click, click and see the charts real fast.

                What do you use?

I HAVE BEEN MESSING AROUND WITH SOME SCANS LOOKING FOR CUP AND HANDLES. MOSTLY CUP BASES THAT HAVEN'T FORMED THE HANDLE YET. WHAT I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO DO IS TO LOOK FOR STOCKS THAT MADE A 52 WEEK LOW ABOUT A MONTH PREVIOUS TO TODAYS DATE. THAT WAY THEY HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO BOTTOM OUT AND TO START TO MAKE OR HAVE MADE THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CUP BASE. IT'S ONE WAY OF APPROACHING IT. I'M SURE THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER WAYS YOU COULD GO ABOUT IT WITH A LITTLE IMAGINATIVE WORK BUT THIS HAS PROVIDED A FEW NICE FORMATIONS FOR ME. NB, YOU COULD ALSO TRY BIGCHARTS.COM. THEY HAVE A NICE PLATFORM. NOT AS NICE AS STOCKCHARTS BUT NICE AND ARE FREE. STOCKFETCHER ALSO HAS A FREE SECTION FOR SCANNING. CLEARSTATION.COM HAS FREE CHARTS. LYCOS.COM ALSO HAS FREE CHARTING THAT IS DECENT. MEDVED QUOTETRACKER IS ANOTHER GOOD ONE FOR FREE.

Here's a good example of why you need to have the volume for this pattern to follow through. The cup formed through the latter half of last year with a breakout the first of January...just didn't have the volume to sustain it.

A few years back, October ___ 20__??? IBD ran an article about BREAKOUTS DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE TO HAVE VOLUME...Personally, I think they were grasping at straws...You would never catch Mr. Breakout saying anything like that.

I tore out the article and saved it...But I can't find it and I can't remember which year it appeared.

What you need is a way to have ticker symbols on the left and charts on the right of your screen so you can click really fast. I found 47 potentials last night looking at almost 200 charts...took 15 mins...Of course it doesn't end there...I have to take a closer look at the potentials later today.

I have a 22" monitor so it is easy to see both the lists and charts at the same time...A 19" monitor will do though but a 17" monitor is too time consuming unless you make the font real small.

No Problem...I looked at about 1,000 charts...It is actually kinda fun....I love looking at charts anyway.

I also posted some on my thread that seem to have possibly found recent support at the 50sma(I did not not use any fundie criteria on those)...Worked on the Double Bottom scan last night...Those that already passed the mid-point high of the W and those that just hit the 2nd bottom...However, in back testing them the results were dissapointing...especially the ones that just hit the second bottom...Will look at that again next month.
