If your uncle farms beef, I probably know him .... Beautiful down here ain't it Webs? .... You in VA?

Actually my handle "Lyehopper" is the name of a hollow between two mountains on my farm. Old timers pronounce it Lyehoppa Hollah .... The Hollow got it's name back in the 20's when the man who once owned my farm and another adjacent farmer (a notorius moonshiner) were asked by their wives what the metal container/hopper they had built and hauled up in the hollow was for. The pair said they were cooking up some Lye (soap) in it, and told the women to mind their own buisness, they said it was just a Lye Hopper. Thus the name Lyehopper Hollow eventially stuck ..... Still a little "Lye" being cooked up in these hollows from time to time.lol

Depends on exactly where it is. In the hotty golf comunities 3/4 acre is $100-150k. At the hot spots on Smith Mountain Lake 1/2 acre lakefront might be $1 million!

Up Lyehopper Hollow you can pick up some prime land that's about 25 minutes from Roanoke for 12-18k per acre depending on how much you want. You'll have cattle and good old redneck folks for neighbors .... But you can shoot white tail deer from your bathroom window with your favorite 30-06 while you take a dump if you'd like to and no one will care.lol If you want 100 acres or more budget in $5-7k per acre (might include some mountain land). I've paid as little as 1k per acre but that was in 95. If you can stand being an hour away from town there's still some $2-3k per acre land out there (large tracts).

kinda-sorta... I own a mfg company (since 1985, steel fab, cusom machining, machinery building), own commercial real estate, own farm land (have a commercial beef herd). have built a few houses (and some commercial const)

Decided to develop this 102 acre tract as a speculitive deal. Might build a few high end spec houses and market them. Heck I figure if TOL,DHI,KBH,BZH can do it, why not me?...lol

I'm a builder up here in NJ. We build high end custom homes and renovations. Always looking for something distressed, something that somebody needs to get out of, or land, especially cheap land. NJ is getting played out an I've been thinking of liquidating what I have here an relocating somewhere else. Was thinking down near Charlotte, S. Carolina area. Not in the city but an hour or so from the city or coastline.
Been down to your area an it's a beautiful part of the country in the Blue Ridge Mountains. At this point all I really need is a laptop and a good broadband connection.

Ski, check out Clarksville VA (area). HUGE lake there, My bro & me, our boys fish there often .... a lot of good lakefront property that's yet to be developed. Small town but the "Yankee invasion" is underway there. Gotta hate them "damn Yankee's" attitudes... but love their $$$$ ... No offense to you Ski, you seem like a pretty decent Yank .... Pack up your money and come on down.lol

I grew up in a small backwoods town called Lakehurst in NJ. We lived in the woods an I grew up with a healthy respect for hunting, fishing, and trapping from early on. Still bowhunt and small game and do alot of fishing, mostly surf fishing, for stripers in the spring and fall. When I hit the Army they loved me on point for my ability to move about and notice movement in the jungle. Much to my detriment it seems I always got to run point. Love the woods and nothing better than to sit in a tree stand quietly and just observe.

Sound like a real nice area you got down there. Have to agree about the Yankee attitudes. Alot of us think our shit don't stink but couldn't pour piss out of a boot if it came down to living in the woods or off the land.
In 1978 I had a lady friend, Liza Gore was her name, she was black and had 106 acres in Whitings, NJ that she used to pig farm. Me an a couple of buddies farmed it for a couple of years and raised hogs. We had the largest organic farming operation in NJ at the time. My hair was down to the middle of my back in those days an I was a veritable wild man. Those were good time. I lived in a tent on her property for two years. No running water or facilities. I just needed to air out for a few years after the army and Nam.

My Uncle inherited his farm from his inlaws, after his wife died. About half of my relatives live in and around Roanoake/Salem, so there's a good chance that you probably know some of them. My Grandpa grew apples and produce and used to sell them at the farmers market in Roanoake.

My Grandpa drowned in his farm pond when I was two years old, so I never got to know him, but we used to visit my Grandmother on occasion while I was growing up. I haven't been there in quite a few years, but I've been thinking that it's about time I get up there and see everyone.

I live in Florida, but I will always have a connection with Roanoake. I may have to consider buying some land up there one day.

Ok IIC, I'll give you your thread back now. lol

We've taken over Doug's thread. Sorry Doug. I used to Lye but no more. No time anymore. I'm into speed but only on snow going down a mountain thus the moniker, skiracer. I'm sure we would be friends though and have alot in common about the woods and stuff.
