I try to swim one mile everytime I go to the rec. center , 3X each week. The hardest part is consistently being there without getting sick, or the pool being closed, or kids jumping onto you from the side or getting in the lane. Have been going at 6:45 each morning. The shoulders are holding up so far. I was also weight training but it was too much of a risk getting injured on the nautilus machines. My record was about 135 miles 2 years ago. Not bad since I took up swimming at age 57.

I do a lot of shoulder stretching. If you go on the net and look for physical therapies for people with rotator cuff problems you'll find all sorts of shoulder stuff (stretches along with the usual weight lifting stuff). Even if you have no rotator cuff problems you'll find lots of good shoulder stretches.
