... there is another group of people who advocate that just the first five trading days of January are predictive of the rest of the year. We took data from 1950 through 2013 for the S&P 500 Index and then calculated both positive and negative results on a weekly and monthly basis.

For the 64 years from 1950 through 2013, a positive return in January was predictive of a positive return for the year 92.5% of the time. A positive return during the first five trading days of January was predictive of a positive return for the year 90.0% of the time.

A negative return in January was predictive of a negative return for the year 54.2% of the time — basically not predictive at all. A negative return during the first five trading days of January was predictive only 50% of the time, amounting to nothing more than a flip of a coin.

MIMO Thanx for the information. The Whole Stock Market appears to be just a flip of a coin. The Magazine Market is definitely in decline , I just received a mailer offering me 1 yr of Forbes Magazine for 10 BUCKS !

Rules for Pick of The Year (PoTY) 2016

OK. Let’s do it. Let’s keep it simple as before.

You have until the end of January up to 11:59 PM PST to make a pick - starting price will be the closing price, (per Yahoo, unless it's shown that the Yahoo price is incorrect) the last trading day of January. Any stock trading on the NASDAQ, AMEX or NYSE is fair game, long or short.

We welcome IPOs if picked by the end of January and starting price will be the closing price of the IPO.

Picks submitted after January are welcome, but comes with a 20% penalty of the closing price.

Discussions and concerns are welcome. Good Luck!

Billy I guess you are banking on Sears And Rubbish going belly up? On Saturday I passed through a Sears at a local mall and one section has about 30 Tread Mills on the floor with assorted other exercise machines .......some well over $2500! Not one person was looking at them , but the lines for Cinnabuns , Kentucky fried chicken, and Popeyes were loaded .....I guess those New Year resolutions for losing weight went right out the window! LOL

Phoenix, I'd say there's at least a 50/50 chance of SHLD going under this year. Our local store has more employees than customers. I don't see how they can even pay the utilities and rent at the mall.

Billy I hate to see anyone lose their job , but a huge company like Sears that has been around for such a long time , I just can't imagine it closing. I am sure they are sitting on a lot of valuable real estate , and perhaps they could reinvent themselves as a company similar to Vornado? Check out Vornado http://www.vno.com/
