Yesterday I added AMAT to my Investopedia portfolio, at 35.77

Yesterday was a moderately awful day, but the reporting is for last Friday: 30% invested, my portfolio was up .56%, for a total gain of 1.74%. That means I trail SPY, up .98% (2.00% total). It is early days. More importanty, THO gained 5% or more since it was bought and restarts its 3 month holding period, with a starting price of 109.19.

Karel, Things are looking good for AMAT. If they have a blow out quarterly report and a big move up, how long will you hold?

Billy, I will follow my usual discipline, that worked quite well in my Marketocracy portfolio. I give a stock 3 months to gain 5%. If at the end of a week a stok has gained this 5% or more, that closing price becomes the new reference point and a new 3 month period is started. If 3 months pass without a 5% gain, I sell. The idea is that these are momentum stocks, more or less, and I want to hitch a ride. If the stock dawdles along (or worse), I will probably be able to pick a better stock.

Both AMAT and CNNX are up I assume in anticipation of good earnings reports. I'm holding both as my gains have got to be greater than any loss from a bad report unless earnings are terrible, that's not likely. And the dividends will keep coming. Look at the blue graph of CNNX' dividend growth :

Here's AMAT's dividend history going back over 10 years

My last update on my Investopedia portfolio is from exactly 3 months ago. I need to be a bit more active. Actually I have been a tiny bit more active, as I have added 2 stocks in the meantime: WLDN on April 3 (@ 31.07), and LRCX on May 1 (@ 145.93). This Monday MKSI will be added.

Two stocks have overstayed their welcome, meaning they did not gain at least 5% in the 3 months I have held them: THO and AGX. They will be replaced, but first I will complete the portfolio. After MKSI, I will add one more stock and then I will look to replace the duds.

Two stocks crossed the 5% gains treshold: NVDA, reset on last Friday, May 12, @ 127.89, and AMAT also last Friday @ 43.44. (I just look at the weekly close.)

My portfolio stands at a modest gain of about 3.5% YTD, lagging SPY (+5.2%) and QQQ (+12.5%) but beating IWM (Russell 2000; +0.9%)

OK, my last update now is from 2 weeks ago, not 3 months. We are making some progress here. Today I added FOXF @ 33.15

3 stocks crossed the 5% gains treshold: NVDA, reset on May 19 @ 136, and WLDN @ 33.02 and LRCX @ 155.12, both on May 26. (I just look at the weekly close.)

BTW, NVDA is really on a tear. There is more and more talk about shorting it. In my real money portfolio I trimmed it back a little, not because of those fears (I did it before I heard of them), but just to keep some balance. In the Investopedia portfolio I will just let it run.

The portfolio has now all slots filled, 8 stocks, about 80% invested. Now I can start to mind it, beginning with the two stocks that did not gain at least 5% in the 3 months (and more now) I have held them: THO and AGX. I will replace them one by one, and just one per week.

This is supposed to be a lazy approach at investing.

My portfolio stands at a modest gain of about 4.5% YTD, lagging SPY (+6.5%) and QQQ (+14.7%!) but beating IWM (Russell 2000; +1.0%)

                  Reinvesting dividends

As eagle-eyed followers of this thread may have noticed, the Portfolio total is a bit ($700+) higher than the combined totals of the positions. The person who set up this ‘competition’ has included dividends in the setup, that’s why. It was possible in my portfolio program to (virtually) reinvest dividend for my virtual SPY, QQQ and IWM positions, so that will be reflected in the next report. The dividends from SPY, QQQ and IWM were much larger, so my portfolio lags a little bit more.

                    AGX goes, AAOI enters

My portfolio held two stocks, AGX and THO, that didn’t gain at least 5% in the last 3 months and AGX is the oldest one of those. THO was bought earlier, OK, but it hit 5% almost a month later, so it ‘jumped over’ AGX. AGX went for 61.70, a loss of 16.5%. It has been replaced with AAOI @ 74.96.

2 stocks crossed the 5% gains treshold on June 3: the incredible NVDA @ 143.64 and AMAT @ 46.80

My portfolio stands at +6,2% (+1.6% for the week). The ‘market’: SPY +8.01 (+1.5%), QQQ +16.7% (+1.8%) and IWM +2.9 (+1.9%)

OK, I was busy having a life, so just a little update. Last week was absolutely awful for my portfolio, which is high in tech. It lost 7% after ending the previous week at +9.4% total. It is still in positive territory at +2.1%. My crazy stock NVDA ended the week at 151,62, a new 5%+ gain since the previous one. If you want to keep score: the next target is 159.20, to be reached or exceeded at the weekly close.

Well, $$$Mr. Market$$$’s method works and I have tried my “hold them as long as they gain 5% or more in a quarter” in the past on Marketocracy and it worked then. So I decided to do this in real money too. In real money I am up 5.5% or so for this part of my portfolio, after a nice day yesterday.

After a month this thread can use an update:

The last month was a mixed bag. End of June and the beginning of July saw a dreadful tech slump, which impacted my portfolio heavily. It even dropped to negative territory around July 4th. Now the tech bulls are charging again and my portfolio stands at a 10.7% gain. Not bad, compared to SPY (+9.2%) and IWM (Russell 2000, +4.8%). QQQ is still out of reach (+16.0%)

The ETF’s have had their recent dividends reinvested. My portfolio also received some dividends; those remain in cash.

The action in my portfolio: on June 26 I replaced THO with ANET. THO went for 108.30, (+6.35%). ANET was bought at 161.52
The closed trades (2) now average -5%, with an average holding period of 143 days.
All closed and open trades together (10) average 10.8%, average holding period 95 days.

Since June 16, the last reported date, some stocks have crossed their 5% tresholds:
                          June 30: FOXF (35.60, new target 37.38 )
July 14: NVDA (not again! 164.95! new target 173.20)
                          July 14: AAOI (84.20, new target 88.41)

That is all. No stocks are due for replacement until August 15, so my only work on this part of my portfolio until then is some housekeeping and reporting.

Bookkeeping for the week ending Friday, July 21.

My portfolio gained a bit more and now is at a 12.6% gain (+1.7% for the week). SPY is at +9.7% (+0.5%) and IWM/Russell 2000 at +5.4% (+0.6%). QQQ is still top dog at +17.6% (+1.4%)

There will no trading in my portfolio as no stocks are due for replacement until August 15, or later, if MKSI succeeds in making its 5% before that day. It is currently down: -1.6%

This week 3 stocks have made their 5% targets:
                            LRCX: 163.53, new target 171.71
                            FOXF: 37.60, new target 39.48
                            AAOI: 89.95, new target 94.45

                            That’s all.

It is not my intentention, nor has it been my practice to give weekly updates, but there is a smallish bit of news.

Bookkeeping for the week ending Friday, July 28.

My portfolio gained again and now is at a 13.7% gain (+1.0% for the week). SPY is at +9.8% (+0.0%) and IWM/Russell 2000 at +4.9% (-0.4%). QQQ lost a bit but still is top dog at +17.4% (-0.2%)

There will be no trading in my portfolio until August 15 at the earliest, when MKSI needs to have reached 84.74 to stay in. It is currently on the rise and at 83.35

The news is that one stock made (and exceeded) its 5% target: AAOI closed at 96.64, new target 101.47

                              That’s all.
