Be very cautious in this market... I'm taking small positions here. I think we may be going into a major correction.

i kind of feel the same way, just in case. but i dont want to buck the trend or the sentiment. plus the govt still has a lot of shares to sell off.

The economy added a net 290,000 jobs in April — the biggest monthly total in four years. Yet the unemployment rate rose from 9.7 percent to 9.9 percent.
How did that happen? It's because of how the government calculates who's employed and who isn't.
The government does two employment surveys each month.
One is called the payroll survey. It asks companies and government agencies how many people they employ. This survey produces the number of jobs gained or lost during the month. In April, the payroll survey showed a net increase of 290,000 jobs. By contrast, in January 2009, the survey showed a loss of 779,000 jobs.
The other is called the household survey. Government workers ask households about the employment status of adults living there. Those without jobs are asked whether they're looking for one. If they're not, they're no longer considered part of the work force and aren't counted as unemployed. The household survey produces the unemployment rate each month.
As recessions drag on, many people who have lost a job and have looked for one for months, give up. These "discouraged" workers were counted as unemployed in the household survey while they were looking. But once they stop, they're no longer counted as unemployed. About 2.4 million people were classified as "discouraged workers" last month, up from 1.4 million when the recession began in December 2007. That exodus helped keep the unemployment rate from rising even higher.
Once a recovery gets under way, positive news — like rising stock prices or companies announcing plans to hire — leads discouraged workers to start looking again. As they rejoin the work force and look for jobs, these people are once again counted as unemployed in the household survey. And they drive up the unemployment rate.
All that's happening now. Previously discouraged workers have become encouraged enough to start looking again because companies have started hiring again. So these people are counted as unemployed again. The result is that in April, the unemployment rate rose from 9.7 percent to 9.9 percent.

Good research, Ski. How do "discouraged" workers live without income?

well im assuming that what they are stating is the truth on how they go about getting the numbers and percentages. it makes sense out of a situation that at times i found to be perplexing. if this is in fact the truth of the matter then i can understand how they can have two diverging numbers or statistics which seem to contradict one another.

Hey OBAMA won't let them down .....I am sure there is some government program out there for them ......if all fails join ACORN....they always seem to be able to pull money out of a hat!
Many of the jobs in the report are due to the hiring of census workers and IRS agents . Census workers will at some future point enter the rolls of the unemployed ......WHAT A SHELL GAME! What we need are meaningful permanent jobs that entail producing some goods or services, like infrastruture work and good technical jobs!
Unfortunately what is coming out of the schools these days will only add to the unemployment rolls! Many HS graduates can barely read, and any meaningful job for them will be difficult to find. Bottom line... ya have a kid looking for work with pants hanging down past the crack of his AS* ,and with piercings and both arms covered with tattoos ..... as an employer , would you be willing to hire him? LOL CASE CLOSED!

you are seeing the collaspe of a once great country. entitlement doesnt work. what works is moral fiber, strong work ethics, and earning your way while contributing to the good of the whole by paying your own way. but years of welfare and entitlement programs along with the ACLU have changed our country. it is going to take some radical action to take it back and get back on the right track. and it is a slim chance that our political leaders will do that. it is going to be left up to the American people to throw out the existing bullshit and return things to the way the majority of us believe it should be. but doing that is going to hurt alot of malingering lazy bastards who have been on a free ride for generations. it has to stop!

True..but we also must realize the inevitable that our standard of living is much much higher than that of the rest of the world. If people are willing to come here to work for $2.00 and hour and the right to sleep on a non-dirt floor, they will keep coming here. They will take the jobs that Americans turn down and will force wages lower and lower.

Also, with all of the outsourcing taking place, entry level jobs for college graduates won't exist anymore. The days of white collar employees rising through the ranks from entry level positions at a Fortune 500 company are very much numbered.

We are getting what we asked for.

that is precisely wherein the problem lies. our standard of living rose to much higher levels than the rest of the world but in doing so our base labor costs also rose to much higher levels than the rest of the world. now that American corporations, can we call them American or are they really international but based in the United States, can outsource their work and labor to a number of cheaper countries to produce the same goods will that leave the US out of the production mix entirely and out of the jobs that went along with being in that mix. the American people are going to be the ones left holding the bag but only after generations of us have given their working lives to the same corps that are now looking for cheaper labor and outsourcing their production facilities to those countries that can provide cheaper labor. there has to be an equitable answer to this problem. and that answer is not going to please everyone but our interests should concern our own plight first before everyone else. and the same American corps that got rich off of our work and lives should be made to give some thought to where they came from and on whose backs they got there on.
