    The FOOL loves $$$MM$$$ stocks

    Motley Fool
Comtech Heads to a Higher Orbit
Wednesday June 8, 3:12 pm ET
    By Stephen D. Simpson, CFA

Comtech Telecommunications (Nasdaq: CMTL - News) investors got a little boost on Wednesday as this advanced communications company posted another exceptionally strong quarter.

For at least the fifth quarter in a row, Comtech not only beat Wall Street expectations, but did so handily. That said, Comtech guidance for the fourth quarter, though positive, was perhaps a bit more modest than this quarter would have suggested. The stock initially eased off a bit once that guidance was issued on the conference call, but quickly rebounded.

Sales for the third quarter were up 47% and the company saw robust top-line results across all three product segments -- with sales in mobile data almost doubling and sales in RF amplifiers more than doubling. Margins were solid and a lower tax rate in this quarter propelled net income growth of 76% over the prior year.

Management certainly isn't abusing the balance sheet to attain this growth. Accounts receivable actually declined and inventory growth seems appropriate relative to the growth of the business. Cash flow was also strong and the company has generated about $43 million of free cash flow over the trailing three quarters.

Simply put, business is solid. Comtech has maintained its market share and technology leadership in satellite modems and the government is accelerating the launch of next-generation mobile transceivers.

Better still, business could get better. While the government will likely always be a significant factor, Comtech does serve growing customers like PanAmSat (NYSE: PA - News), Globecomm (Nasdaq: GCOM - News), Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM - News), and Sony (NYSE: SNE - News) in its telecom transmission business, as well as prime contractors like Raytheon (NYSE: RTN - News) and Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL - News) in the RF amplifier business.

Looking just a bit ahead, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to foresee more commercial interest. The telecom business has applications addressing VoIP, long distance, and TV (broadcast or cable), and the satellite tracking used in mobile data could be useful to industries like trucking. What's more, the RF amplifier business has numerous potential markets like medicine, satellite communications, and general instrumentation.

With robust growth, strong technological leadership, and a very attractive balance sheet, I really like this company. Unfortunately, it's been pushed up more than 140% over the past year. Nevertheless, with an EV-to-FCF ratio in the teens, a strong return on equity, and a history of surpassing estimates, I don't think it's overpriced just yet.

        • Thanks, Webs. I was getting hoping to sell it soon, but I'll have to hold it for a bit.

CMTL just added to S&P 500...this should give this one a kick in the pants.

Damn, and I was just going to pick back up the other half of my CMTL position yesterday with my AMLN proceeds.... oh well, back to seek mode.

It was down to either CMTL or doubling up on OFG, but I wanted to see if AMLN would pull back, first. Should have known that AMLN is a cat long out of the bag now. OFG is still tempting though...

OFG is like a hooker on a corner. It's screaming, "I'M FOR SALE AND I'M CHEAP!!!"

I think CMTL is making its run now.

I got back in at 35.78 on 9/1. Guess time will tell if we're right or wrong.

                      Ten Cent View

Here's my ten cent view of CMTL:

She's bullish; but don't be surprised if she retests the green line. I think that would even be healthy for it. Look for her to hit her head against the overhead resistance, and then pullback to $36 for another run at breaking the line. Even if she busts resistance this time, I'd think it would be short lived. I'd be looking for that resistance (turned support) to fail and she retests that $36 line again. In short, I think $36 before you cash out with a pocket full of cash.

Pull-back to the green line would look like a handle in this double-bottom base, which is healthy if on lower volume.

I think CMTL would be a screaming buy if it does pull back on lower volume.

I think CMTL will be a sell soon, at $39 (and I am prepared with a GTC limit this time). Just one more pop of $1-2 like we've seen twice over the last 2 days, and it's there. Either that or a couple more days of a bullish market. Either way, I think CMTL will be sold before next week is over. I'll also have to re-evaluate my NGPS position now, to see if that needs to be sold as well. It hasn't done quite as well as the CMTL has, but it's still up around 10% for me, so I'm not complaining. I'd like to get 15%+ for both, and roll it together for another $$MM pick, but I'll just wait and see how the market behaves in the next few days.

One more day ought to do it. Target is just around the corner!

                                Getting very close

Any hour now. It's only a few dimes away! I might adjust my limit to get out while the getting's good.
