I almost always use a limit order to avoid getting bitten by buying at the ask price (market). Always look at the bid-ask spread. If it is larger than a penny or two, watch out. The one circumstance where I frequently use market is when an intraday trade recommendation arrives by email from Zacks. Within minutes the volume of buys or sells by Zacks subscribers overwhelms the price, so I get in or out as fast as I can with a market order. OR, I sometimes wait till the next day with a GTC limit order. But, usually it's gotten away from me by then. A smaller, but noticeable effect can sometimes be seen with the HUGE ONE's buy recs. See, even WE can influence the market. LOL Maybe we should be called "Ernie's algo-bots".

P.S. NEVER NEVER NEVER use a market order in the first hour of trading (called "amateur hour" by some). That's when the market is catching up with all the AH and PM prices. Phoenix, Along a similar vein to your "Could you drive any better if I shoved that cell phone up your ass?" I read a study that said those that had to pee while driving were excellent very observant drivers, however, once the situation became extremely urgent, the pee-rs were more dangerous than the average drunk driver.
