      A Farewell Salute To Shifty!

One of the "Band of Brothers" soldiers died on June 17, 2009.

We're hearing a lot today about big splashy memorial services.

I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell "Shifty" Powers.

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy
Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st
      Airborne Infantry.

If you've seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you
know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty
himself is interviewed in several of them.

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't
know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having
trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was
at the right gate, and noticed the "Screaming Eagle", the symbol of
the 101st Airborne, on his hat.

      Making conversation, I asked him
if he'd been in the 101st Airborne,
or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the
101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served,
and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said, "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so,
and was in until sometime in 1945 . . . " at which point my heart
      skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said, "I made the 5 training
jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know
      where Normandy is?"

At this point my heart stopped.

I told him yes, I know exactly where Normandy was and I know what D-Day was.

At that point he said "I also made a second jump into Holland, into Arnhem."

      I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . . and then I realized
that it was June, just after the anniversary of D-Day.

      I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France, and he said;
"Yes. And it's real sad because
these days so few of the guys are
left, and those that are, lots of them can't make the trip." My heart
was in my throat and I didn't know what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in
Coach, while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to
get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came
forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have
it, that I'd take his in coach.

He said, "No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there
      are
still some who remember what we did and still care is enough to make
an old man very happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it. And
mine are brimming up now as I write this.

Shifty died on June 17 after fighting cancer.

      There was no parade.

No big event in Staples Center.

      No wall-to-wall, back-to-back, 24x7 news coverage.

      No weeping fans on television.

      And that's not right.

Let's give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way.

Please forward this email to everyone you know. Especially, to the veterans.

      Rest in peace, Shifty.

Remarkable story, if a bit tearjerkery. I have a lot of respect for these veterans.

A (very) little bit of background on Snopes (the story is unattributed); and a bit more on Wikipedia

            YES ...I Remember!

            Once upon a time……….

A woman awakes during the night, and her husband isn't in bed with her.

She goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a glass of
whiskey in front of him. He appears to be in deep thought, just staring at the wall.

She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of his whiskey.

"What's the matter, dear?" she asks. "Why are you down here at this time of night?"

The husband looks up from his whiskey, "Do you remember 20 years ago when we were dating, and you were only 16?" he asks solemnly.

            "Yes, I do," she replies.

"Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car making love?"

"Yes, I remember," says the wife, lowering herself into a
            chair beside him.

The husband continues, "Do you remember when he shoved the gun in my face and said, 'Either you marry my daughter, or I'll send you to jail for 20 years?"

"I remember that, too," she replies softly.

He wipes another tear from his cheek and says, "I would have gotten out today."

                Pete,
Of course #1 is better as it shows a spreading of the wealth not just the seeking and accumulation.

                    Respect, Love and Compassion!

A young Christian Lebanese woman describes her life living with the radical Islamists in Lebanon.....It is about 30 minutes long ......the lady is a riveting speaker, and she will hold you spell bound. Should we really worry about it here in the USA ?......trust me according to this young lady .....radical Islam is in, or coming to a town near you! Pass this on!

                      Pete,
That is one brave woman. You can tell she wouldn't take any sh#* from those who try to intimidate her. Maybe we won't allow multiple wives and scores of children from these radicals in the U.S.

Peter, I like them both. Today in my life the first one is more fitting. I have written goals about being completely debt free and financially independent in the next 9 years. It was a 15 year plan and that I am 6 years into. Everything is on track. All I really want to do is own my time, to owe nothing and have money so I can spend all my time with my family and the fun things in life. I want to be able to help my parents, sister, my wife's family. To be able to share and give back would feel extremely satisfying.

Now at that time, the 2nd video would be more appealing to me, since it seems to encompass the life of luxury when you have achieved true wealth and all your spiritual, family, personal and financial goals.

                        Thanks for the vids,
                        Joe

                          Steel ( joe )

Joe thanx for your input .....you do have admirable goals. I set those goals a few years back .....and today I have NO mortgage and ZERO debts ....all my credit cards are paid off.
Some people may say that it is foolish to pay off your house because of the Mortgage Tax Write Offs .....but think of it this way lets us suppose you pay 10,000 interest on your mortgage and you can write off 3,000 .....THINK ABOUT IT... 7,000 is still going down the SHI* Hole ....wasted money! Also there is a psychological thing , and it is great to have extra money to share with family and friends!
Don't buy into any of those MORTGAGE reduction schemes advertized on radio and TV. Ask the bank for an amortization sheet and you will clearly see principle and interest for each month of your mortgage . Simply throw in some extra money each month and watch that mortgage drop fast. This is exactly what I did and knocked off a 30 yr mortgage in about 7 years!
Joe do take care and have a beautiful day!
